Creepypastas are the folktales of the internet generation. Since message boards like Reddit were founded in the early 2000s, users have been creating and sharing urban legends the way kids have always done at sleepovers. The term "creepypasta" is an evolution of the word "copypasta," which refers to any viral text that is copied and pasted on various forums and internet platforms again and again. As you might have guessed, a creepypasta is specific to spooky content and usually consists of a scary story someone shared online.
Creepypastas are usually told in the first person and written to sound like an authentic incident experienced by the writer. They often take on the life of a story passed from class to class and from school to school, where the source is no longer clear, but it might have happened to a friend of a friend or someone's cousin. In this case, the terrifying tales move from forum to forum and are posted repeatedly, often with evolving details. Others might add to the legend by writing their own "firsthand accounts" featuring the same monster or ghost. Some of them became so pervasive that they entered mainstream culture and were even made into horror films. The tale of the Slender Man is perhaps the best-known example, as it was later referenced in a terrible crime.
