Russia's invasion of Ukraine on February 24, 2022, has had the world on the edge of its seat, hoping that the conflict will end as soon as possible and Russia will turn back. Sadly, Russia shows no sign of doing so.

The latest news is that Russian missiles have wounded people and damaged buildings in Kyiv and Kryvyi Rih, officials report. Two people were injured following explosions in Ukraine's capital this morning, according to Kyiv's mayor Vitali Klitschko and military administration head Serhiy Popko. Ukraine's deputy prime minister, Oleksiy Chernyshov, also stated that Russia has launched the largest external cyber attack in recent times on the country's state registries. The registries hold crucial information about Ukrainian citizens, including births, deaths, marriages, and property ownership.

This came after Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy firmly responded on Thursday to remarks made by Russian President Vladimir Putin during his annual news conference in Moscow. The Russian leader had stated that he wanted to "strike somewhere in Kyiv" with a "new missile" and "see what happens." In reply, Zelenskyy said, "Do you think that's a sane person? Simply scumbags."

For many, the turbulent and tumultuous times that we live in make it easy to forget the past. Unfortunately, these acts from Russia are far from unprecedented. For centuries, the many forms of Russia, from the Russian Empire to the USSR, have written a long and bloody history of imperialism, aggression, and expansionism.

Read on for a brief rundown of the current conflict caused by Russia, its context, and where its place is in the story of international Russian intervention.
