In 2021, Mark Zuckerberg decided to rebrand Facebook as Meta as the first step towards building what he called the "metaverse." The change was implemented relatively smoothly in most regions, except in Brazil. A Brazilian computer services company that registered the name Meta Serviços in the late 2000s claims to have been wrongly included in more than 100 lawsuits since 2021, and has also had its Instagram accounts shut down multiple times for supposedly trying to impersonate Zuckerberg's social media company. Meta Serviços filed a lawsuit against Meta citing the damages they have suffered due to third parties confusing the two brands. On February 28, a Brazilian court ruled in favor of Meta Serviços, and ordered that Meta cease operating under that name in Brazil within 30 days. After the deadline, Meta will have to pay 100,000 reais (US$20,201) per day until it complies. Meta has the option to appeal the ruling.
