A poorly placed boat -

The start of the men's triathlon at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics was disrupted when a poorly placed media boat stopped in front of many of the athletes, blocking them from diving into the water to start the race. To add insult to injury, the starting gun went off while the boat was still in the way. It caused havoc and the race had to be restarted.

The saddest person at the Olympics -

A photo of a bored-looking lifeguard sitting beside the pool at the Olympics went viral after the 2016 Rio Olympics. The ridiculousness of having a lifeguard who is undoubtedly a weaker swimmer than those he's supposed to protect was not lost. The photo circulated the internet with captions like "If you feel useless today, just remember that someone is working as a lifeguard at the Olympics."

A priceless reaction -

One of the best moments of the 2020 Tokyo Olympics was the ecstatic hip-thrusting celebration of coach Dean Boxall when Ariarne Titmus won her swimming race. Boxall looked like he was having an out-of-body experience. He strode around punching the air and then proceeded to make sweet love to the barrier in front of him. The video clip was an instant viral hit.

The intensity of Boxall's reaction could only be rivaled by that of Francesco D’Aniello's at the 2008 Olympics. The Italian double-trap shooter won himself a silver medal, and seemed so shocked and overwhelmed that he had a complete emotional breakdown.

The laid-back approach -

American skater Jagger Eaton had his own laid-back approach to his Olympic sport. He took to the ramps with his AirPods in. Skateboarding is a new addition to the roster, debuting at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, but this definitely wouldn't be acceptable in any other sport! Imagine Usain Bolt running with Beats on?

Michael Phelps' death stare -

Michael Phelps can adopt a pretty scary-looking expression when he's in the zone. A photo of him sitting on a chair with earphones in minutes before a race at the Rio Olympics went viral with the hashtag '#phelpsface.'

It was even funnier because the photo was taken when one of his rivals was standing right in front of him, and he appeared to be giving him the death stare. Phelps later clarified that he just looks that way when he's completely in the zone.

The oily Tongan guy! -

Pita Taufatofua is a taekwondo champion who has competed at several Olympic Games. However, most people know him as the hot, oiled-up Tongan guy. He acts as the flag bearer for Tonga each year, and never fails to get a reaction...

Lost keys -

The 2016 Rio Olympics had more mishaps and hilarious stories than any other edition of the Games in history. It started a couple of days before the Games even kicked off, when they lost the keys to the entry gate. They had to get into the stadium with bolt cutters!

A polluted river -

This one hasn't been confirmed, but there were rumors at the time that an athlete taking part in a kayaking event capsized after crashing into an upturned couch that was floating in the water.

The flag mishap -

Next up was the flag mishap. When the Chinese flag was raised after one of their victories, they noticed that the flag had some inaccuracies and seemed to be a cheap knock-off. This was reported to the host country who appeared to correct the mistake, but then the wrong flag was raised again when another Chinese athlete won!

The correct version of the Chinese flag should have the smaller stars tilted to the side, with one of their points angled towards the larger star. The one they had at the Rio Olympics had the stars all straight and parallel to each other. The People's Republic of China take their flag very seriously, and they were not pleased!

The green pool -

Another odd occurrence at the Rio Olympics was that some of the pools turned green. There were conflicting explanations given, including an algae bloom and that they simply ran out of water treatment chemicals.

Ryan Lochte's hair -

It's hard to say whether the fault lies with Ryan Lochte or the Olympic hosts for this one, but for some reason Lochte's bleached white hair turned slightly green after he competed in the swimming event. The chemicals in the water and in his hair did not get along, and his cool icy dye job was ruined.

During the 2016 Games, French fencer Enzo Lefort apparently forgot to take his phone out of his pocket before getting on the mat. An iPhone came flying out of his pocket in the middle of the match!

A bland review -

China's Huo Liang and his partner won the gold medal for their synchronized dive at the Beijing Olympics in 2008. Liang did the traditional pose and pretended to bite his medal for the cameras. Afterward, he commented, "When you bite it, there's not much flavor."

Swimmers can't throw -

Chinese swimmer Sun Yang was overjoyed when he won a gold medal at the 2016 Olympics. As he celebrated, he took his swimming cap off and attempted to throw it to his screaming fans in the crowd. Unfortunately, it was a terrible throw and he somehow managed to throw it backwards into the pool.

A sore "loser" -

Swedish wrestler Ara Abrahamian made a name for himself as an incredibly sore loser at the 2008 Olympics. He was disgusted with the judges and believed he should have been given a higher score. Abrahamian was so displeased with his bronze medal that he basically gave it back.

Don't get too cocky -

A Haitian hurdler totally embarrassed himself at the Rio Olympics. He played up to the cameras just before the race, acting extremely confident and sure of himself. As soon as the race started, he ran straight into the first hurdle and fell over.

This incredible photo of Usain Bolt was captured at the 2016 Rio Olympics. Bolt is so far ahead of the other runners that he has time to look back, observe his advantage, and smile! Some people make winning look easy. For Usain Bolt, it really is.

The Hunger Games -

Tara Lipinski and Johnny Weir are two figure skaters turned sports commentators who certainly have a flair for fashion. When they presented at the 2018 PyeongChang Olympics, viewers observed that their extreme outfits made them look like the presenters in 'The Hunger Games' movies. It was an instant meme.

Don't count your chickens before they're hatched... -

Chinese boxer Lu Bin suffered an embarrassing defeat at the 2016 Rio Olympics. He fought well, but it was embarrassing because he jumped the gun and raised his hand to celebrate, believing he had won. The judges actually ruled that this opponent had won, and the referee had to make him put his hand down.
