Al Capone attained notoriety during the Prohibition era in the United States as the boss of the feared Chicago Outfit, an organized crime syndicate that involved itself with bootlegging, brothels, and murder. Capone was its charismatic head, a ruthless and ambitious individual whose propensity for violence was matched only by his greed for power and money. He was born over 100 years ago, on January 17, 1899. But his name remains synonymous with the gangster culture of the 1920s and '30s.
