Opium dens are widely used as settings in movies, TV, and literature to add an exotic sense of mystery and danger. While smoking opium is not as addictive as injecting heroin, it's not far off it. The reality of these forbidden backroom establishments was a lot darker than they're made out to be. Opium began as a luxury of the wealthy, but quickly spread to the masses all over the world.
