Children in the cold and snow -

Many kids love to play in the snow, or play among the fallen leaves (if snow doesn't hit your region).

To have fun in the cold, keeping your little ones wrapped up warm is the most important thing.

Is your baby usually hot? -

By hot we mean if your baby or child is naturally warmer in temperature on a daily basis.

If so, check on your little one once in a while and if he/she is very hot, you can remove a layer.

Or is your baby usually cold? -

If your child is usually has a cooler temperature by nature, layers are key.

During your outings, check on them to see how hot or cold they are. If their cheek or skin feels chilly, add another layer.

Layer them up! -

Taking off layers later is usually an easier task than putting layers on, especially if your child has already been out and about outside.

How active is your kid outdoors? -

If your child loves to run around in the cold and snow, the amount of clothes they wear play a key role.

If they are very active, think about dressing them in thin layers that are easy to remove.

How active is your kid outdoors? - If your child is less of a runner but enjoys hanging out in the cold outdoors, pack them up nicely with thicker and fewer layers.

Extra layers - That said, it's always a good idea to carry a few layers more with you just in case!

Base layers -

Just like adults, children also need long-sleeved base layers to help keep the core warm. 

For younger kids, a long-sleeve shirt and long leggings usually do the trick.

Long-sleeved onesies -

For young tots who still rely on diapers, full-body onesies are a good choice too. 

They help keep the body temperature nice and warm under the layers when outside, and make a comfortable outfit when playing indoors.

Thick outer layer -

One thick and warm jacket is a must in any kids' wardrobe, regardless of if they love to run in the cold and snow or stand still and watch icicles fall.

Winter mid-layers for kids -

Vests are great mid-layers for children, especially in places where it doesn't get that cold or during transition months.

All types of vests - Vests allow their arms to be more free, their core to stay warm, and some even have hoodies to help keep the head cozy too. They are also easy to layer up!

Wrapped in a one piece -

Snowsuits, or one piece suits, are a great way to wrap your child for wintry weather.

They usually come with plenty of space underneath where you can stack up the layers, depending on how warm or cold your child gets when outdoors.

The rule of three -

Hat, mittens or gloves, and boots. For cold weather, that's your rule of three. 

As for the rest of the clothes, that usually depends on how cold it is outside and whether your child is usually warm or usually cool in temperature.

Fleece hats -

If your little one is not so keen on hats and has the tendency to take it off, wrap-around hats are the way to go.

They don't move around, they keep the head and ears warm, and they don't get in the way of play.

Car rides during winter -

When in the car, Healthy Children suggests babies and children alike wear thin and snug layers of clothing. 

This is to avoid them getting too hot and acclimatized to the new temperature, especially with the heater on in the car.

If your vehicle does not have any heating options, you can leave your child in their outdoor clothing.

The most important thing is that they are comfortable during the car ride.

No loose bits in bed -

Healthy Children also suggests not to surround babies and children with loose ends such as blankets, bedding, sheepskins, and so on, when sleeping. 

Having your child tangled in bedding is not only uncomfortable but can lead to tragic events such as death by suffocation.

Sleeping solutions -

Sleep clothing is often thick enough for a baby to sleep in without a blanket, especially if its usually nice and warm indoors.

If not, add a blanket but make sure its below the waist of your child.

Bedding and blankets should be kept below the waist of your child so they have their arms and face free.

For babies, any bedding should be tucked under the crib mattress or even swaddled around them, leaving their head free.

Watch out for hypothermia -

Hypothermia is when your child's body temperature falls way below their normal temperature. 

Kids can get hypothermia after hours of playing in the cold while not wearing enough or the right kind of clothes.

How to detect hypothermia -

Signs of hypothermia include shivering, slurred speech, becoming clumsy or lethargic, as well as an extremely low body temperature. 

If you think your child has hypothermia, call your doctor immediately.

Frostbite -

If you don't know, frostbite is when your skin or outer tissue freezes. Noses, fingers, toes, and ears are the most common places to get frostbite. 

If you suspect your child has frostbite, take them indoors immediately and cover them with blankets or extra clothing. 

It's important not to rub on the frozen parts of the body. If your child continues to feel numb, call your doctor or take them to the hospital.

Keeping your child close and warm -

If your child is still at an age that they fit into carrier, then put them in it or take it with you. 

If you notice that your little one is getting too cold wandering around, placing them close to you will warm them up quickly.

The best source of heat - There is nothing better than a hug from a loved one! Also, its a lovely way to keep your child both close and warm.

Keeping kids safe during outdoor play - Before taking your child to an ice rink, or any other winter activity, make sure the event and location is child-friendly and appropriate for all ages to enjoy.

Never skate alone -

In an ice rink, never let your child skate alone. Whether it's you, a family friend, or a fellow parent, make sure they have someone with them or at close proximity at all times.

This way, if one falls, the other is there to pick them up or to help avoid any mishaps. Better together!

Going out sledding -

If you're going sledding with your children or letting them go sledding with friends, make sure there are no cars or vehicles in sight (or it could be a nasty crash!).

Also, they should always be supervised. You never know what could happen!

Sledding and protection -

Helmets and other forms of protection are always good to help make sure your children are as safe as they can be when riding down a slope or two.

It also gives a bit more peace of mind to the parents!

Keep your child apart from other sledders -

Make sure your children aren't sledding too close to one anonther, in order to avoid injuries or tragic mishaps.

The same goes for snowmobiling, skiing, and snowboarding.
