Catastrophic wildfires devastate homes in Los Angeles
Dire warnings have been issued as forecasters predict the strongest winds in over a decade

Los Angeles County has declared a state of emergency as the Palisades fire spreads rapidly, burning five football fields per minute. Homes have been destroyed, and tens of thousands of people from Malibu to Santa Monica are being warned to evacuate.
California authorities haven't assessed the damage yet, but photos and videos from the hardest-hit areas show many homes destroyed or damaged by the fire. Strong winds, ranging from tropical-storm to hurricane force, spread the flames across the Pacific Coast Highway and onto the beach, where even lifeguard stations were overwhelmed. With traffic slowing evacuations and flames crossing the highway, many had to abandon their cars, while some considered seeking shelter on the beach.
Los Angeles officials warn that the worst is yet to come as "tornado-like" winds intensify the wildfire crisis, complicating firefighting efforts.
While wildfires have always affected areas like California, climate change has made the weather hotter and drier, extending wildfire season. This is part of a widening global challenge, as wildfires intensify worldwide, affecting many regions in increasingly catastrophic ways.
