In the second season of 'Black Mirror,' the 'San Junipero' episode is centered around a futuristic time where instead of dying, people can upload their brains and live in a digital simulation. While much of the show's technological dystopian themes are a figment of Charlie Booker's (the creator) wild imagination, this episode may actually become a reality.

According to MIT Technology Review, the startup company Nectome wants to preserve your brain by recreating consciousness in a computer. By using a chemical solution that can keep bodies functioning for thousands of years, scientists in the future will be able to upload your brain. People who want to try out this futuristic mechanism, however, would need to be euthanized in the process. So this trial is just for those who are terminally ill, just like in 'Black Mirror.' If successful, the company says someone a lot like you, though not you exactly, may be able to wake up and smell the flowers in a data processor of the future. 

So far, 25 patients paid $10,000 to undergo the process and potentially be brought back to life in the future. See you in San Junipero.
