Viola Desmond's life and legacy
She's on the $10 bill
© Reuters
A portrait of Viola Desmond will grace the Canadian $10 bill more than 70 years after her arrest for sitting in a whites-only section of a movie theatre in New Glasgow, Nova Scotia. Her story is entering the mainstream of Canadian consciousness. She was featured in a Heritage Minute in 2017 and is now the first woman of colour on Canadian to appear on currency.
But Viola Desmond was more than just a woman who got arrested in 1946.
