A mysterious illness has caused 143 deaths in Kwango province, Democratic Republic of Congo, between November 10 and November 25, with symptoms like fever, headache, cough, and anemia. Provincial health minister Apollinaire Yumba urged residents to avoid contact with dead bodies to reduce the risk of spread and appealed for international support to supply medical resources. This outbreak coincides with the ongoing mpox epidemic, which has already resulted in over 47,000 suspected cases and more than 1,000 suspected fatalities in the region, according to WHO reports.
A World Health Organization spokesperson confirmed that the UN health agency was alerted to the outbreak of the mysterious disease in the region last week. The organization is collaborating with the DRC's public health ministry to conduct investigations and determine the cause of the illness.
When considering the deadliest diseases globally, the most publicized and incurable ones often come to mind. However, many of these diseases are not the leading causes of death worldwide. Interestingly, several of the deadliest ones are at least partially preventable through measures such as vaccination, lifestyle changes, or public health interventions.
