The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has released its latest STI Surveillance Report. The report contains the "most current and complete data for nationally notifiable STIs for federally funded control programs." More than 2.5 million cases of chlamydia, gonorrhea, and syphilis were reported in the US. Overall, cases of chlamydia were level, while gonorrhea decreased for the first time in a decade. The most alarming statistic is the exponential rise of syphilis cases across the nation.
In this gallery, we break the CDC report down for you, not only in number of cases by state, but also by rate per 100,000 population and rate per 100,000 births in the cases of congenital syphilis. The rate per 100k is important, as some states may have a high number of cases but this represents a small portion of their population, and vice versa.
