How dangerous is group B strep, and what's being done to prevent it?

Group B strep is a type of bacteria that many healthy people carry in their bodies: it naturally exists in the gut and lower reproductive tracts of both men and women and for the most part is harmless. But occasionally the bacteria invade the body and cause certain infections, some of which can be fatal. To add to the worry, the condition usually only affects pregnant women who in turn can pass what's known as GBS disease to their unborn child.
