Spinal muscular atrophy (SMA) is a rare hereditary neuromuscular disorder in which the spinal cord does not form normally. This inhibits voluntary muscle action, leading to a gradual decrease in the mass and strength of muscles, or atrophy. There is currently no cure for SMA, but if diagnosed early, treatment and support are available to manage the symptoms and help people with SMA obtain the best possible quality of life.
