Toffee is a sweet treat that became popular in England and across Europe in the early 1800s. Made by caramelizing brown sugar or molasses along with butter, the confection is known as buttercrunch in America, where white granulated sugar is the preferred ingredient. Today, toffee in all its wide varieties is a popular candy enjoyed around the world. Together with caramel (a confectionery product made by heating a variety of sugars and mixing with cream), toffee is also used as a flavoring in puddings and desserts, as a filling in bonbons, or as a topping for ice-cream and milkshakes.
