Former US President Jimmy Carter passed away at his home in Plains, Georgia, on Sunday, December 29. At 100 years of age, he was the longest-living former US president in history. "My father was a hero, not only to me but to everyone who believes in peace, human rights, and unselfish love. My brothers, sister, and I shared him with the rest of the world through these common beliefs," read a statement from his son, Chip Carter. Jimmy Carter is survived by four children, 11 grandchildren, and 14 great-grandchildren. His wife of 77 years, Rosalynn Carter, passed away in 2023 at the age of 96.
Carter served as president from 1977 to 1981, negotiating the release of over 50 Americans captured during the Iran hostage crisis during his time in office. In 1982, he founded the Carter Center with his wife Rosalynn, which continues its work in advancing human rights across 80 countries. In 2002, Carter was awarded a Nobel Peace Prize for his efforts to prevent conflict around the world.
