How's this for a nightmare scenario. A celebrity singing the United States national anthem in front of millions of people—and completely messing it up! Unfortunately, this has happened to several very unlucky stars. It might seem odd that such a familiar anthem has been tanked so many times, especially considering that most American school kids sing it every day. But in fact, it's an extremely difficult song to perform. It requires an impressive vocal range that would challenge any singer, and is especially daunting when performed live under the scrutiny of thousands of spectators, as well as millions more watching at home.
Singer-songwriter Ingrid Andress was given the responsibility of opening Major League Baseball's annual Home Run Derby with the National Anthem on July 15. The four-time Grammy nominee, known for songs like 'More Hearts Than Mine' and 'Wishful Drinking,' took the mic at the Globe Life Field in Arlington, Texas, to begin 'The Star-Spangled Banner.' She got the evening off to a rocky start by missing several of the notes throughout the song and generally singing out of tune. Her bungled rendition even drew visible reactions from the baseball players on the field behind her.
Andress is far from being the only singer to experience this embarrassment. Browse through this gallery and read about some of the most cringeworthy celebrity renditions of 'The Star-Spangled Banner.'
