Andre Braugher - The news of Andre Braugher's sudden passing on Dec. 11 shocked fans around the world. The 61-year-old actor was intensely private, but in a 2014 interview, he stated that he had “stopped drinking alcohol and smoking years ago.” Braugher was best known for playing the beloved Captain Raymond Holt in the comedy series 'Brooklyn Nine-Nine' for its eight seasons.

Beloved former First Lady Rosalynn Carter passed away at her home surrounded by family on November 19. She was 96 years old and had entered hospice care shortly before her death, having been diagnosed with dementia in May. Her husband, former President Jimmy Carter, has himself been in hospice care since February. The 99-year-old shared a statement following his wife's passing, remembering her as "my equal partner in everything I ever accomplished." Rosalynn Carter was an early advocate for mental health awareness and support, as well as a champion of caregivers. She founded the Rosalynn Carter Institute for Caregivers in 1987, as well as the Carter Center with her husband in 1982.

Smash Mouth frontman Steve Harwell sadly passed away at the age of 56 on September 4. Harwell's manager, Robert Hayes, released a statement explaining that the singer “has been struggling with alcohol abuse throughout his life — and now, he’s reached the final stage of liver failure.” The following day, he announced that Harwell had passed away, "peacefully and comfortably,” with loved ones by his side.

However, by August, he had entered hospice care. Chicago legend DJ Casper, the creator of the beloved dance song 'Cha Cha Slide,' also died on August 7. The hit song was released in 2000 and shot Casper to fame. He performed all over the world and even toured with James Brown. In 2016, he was diagnosed with cancer, in both his liver and kidneys. He fought the disease for years but finally passed away on Monday at the age of 58.

Angus Cloud -

Angus Cloud's family made a statement sharing that the young actor had died on July 31. The announcement made reference to the 25-year-old 'Euphoria' star's battle with mental illness. “It is with the heaviest heart that we had to say goodbye to an incredible human today. As an artist, a friend, a brother and a son, Angus was special to all of us in so many ways. Last week he buried his father and intensely struggled with this loss. The only comfort we have is knowing Angus is now reunited with his dad, who was his best friend. Angus was open about his battle with mental health and we hope that his passing can be a reminder to others that they are not alone and should not fight this on their own in silence,” they wrote. His mother later clarified that she did not believe his death was intentional. In September, the coroner confirmed that Cloud had died of an accidental overdose of fentanyl, cocaine, methamphetamine, and other drugs.

Paul Reubens passed away on Sunday, July 31, at the age of 70, after privately battling cancer for several years. The Pee-wee Herman actor delighted children and adults with his iconic character for decades. His family shared a message he had written to his Instagram page following his death: “Please accept my apology for not going public with what I’ve been facing the last six years. I have always felt a huge amount of love and respect from my friends, fans and supporters. I have loved you all so much and enjoyed making art for you.”

Irish singer Sinéad O'Connor, best known for the hit 'Nothing Compares 2 U', released in 1990, has died at the age of 56. The singer's family released a statement on July 26: "It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved Sinéad. Her family and friends are devastated and have requested privacy at this very difficult time." O'Connor was reportedly found unresponsive in her London home by police. The cause of death has not yet been determined but authorities aren't treating it as suspicious.

Randy Meisner -

Iconic American rock band the Eagles said goodbye to one of their founding members on July 26. Bassist and vocalist Randy Meisner passed away at the age of 77 due to complications of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. His bandmates shared the news in a statement on Thursday, July 27. Meisner helped to found the Eagles in the early 1970s along with Don Henley, Glenn Frey, and Bernie Leadon. Henley and Frey handled most of the songwriting and singing, but Meisner's impressive vocal range was front and center for their hit ballad 'Take It to the Limit.' Described by Don Felder as “the sweetest man in the music business," Meisner wasn't entirely comfortable with the band's growing success and fame. He left the group after becoming ill and feeling homesick during their 'Hotel California' tour in 1997. He carried on a quieter solo career and married his girlfriend of 12 years, Lana Rae, in 1996. They were together for 20 years before tragedy struck. In 2016, Rae was killed when a shotgun she was moving misfired in its case and shot her. Meisner struggled with mental health issues after the horrific loss. He is survived by his three children from a previous marriage.

Tony Bennett -

Legendary singer Tony Bennett sadly passed away at the age of 96, on July 21, 2023, less than two weeks before his 97th birthday. While the cause of death wasn't mentioned, Bennett had been suffering from Alzheimer’s disease since 2016. He shared his diagnosis with the public in 2020, declaring that “Life is a gift – even with Alzheimer’s.” Despite the cognitive impairment typical of the devastating condition, Bennett continued to remember every line from his repertoire of songs. His longtime collaborator and friend Lady Gaga said that once the music came on, he always knew exactly what to do. In fact, Bennett won his 20th Grammy in 2022 for their album 'Love For Sale.' It was a long road from his first Grammy, which he won in 1963 for his beloved record, 'I Left My Heart In San Francisco.'

Jane Birkin -

Jane Birkin, the singer, actress, and fashion icon, passed away on July 16 at the age of 76. The English-French star was born in London but found fame singing in French, relocating there in the 1970s and striking up a personal and artistic relationship with songwriter Serge Gainsbourg, recording the historic song 'Je T'aime...moi non plus' with him. Her relationship with Gainsbourg, which began after meeting on the set of 'Slogan' (1969), made her internationally famous, and together they had a daughter, award-winning actress and singer Charlotte Gainsbourg. Though her fame kicked off with Gainsbourg, Birkin became an "it" girl of her own accord, and she was one of the last surviving 1960s femmes who piqued worldwide interest in French culture. She also inspired Hermès' Birkin handbag, which remains wildly popular around the globe.

Andrea Evans -

Andrea Evans, the popular soap star known for playing Tina Lord on 'One Life to Live' and Rebecca Hotchkiss on 'Passions,' died at the age of 66 following a battle with breast cancer. She passed on July 9 at her home, casting director Don Carroll told The Hollywood Reporter. Evans, nicknamed "Daytime's Diva of Dirt" by People magazine, faced a traumatic incident after finding fame on 'One Life to Live' as a stalker accosted her and sent her death threats, but her love for acting persisted and she appeared on not only 'Passions' but also 'The Bold and the Beautiful' and 'The Young and the Restless.'

Alan Arkin -

Oscar-winning actor Alan Arkin died on June 30, his family announced. “Our father was a uniquely talented force of nature, both as an artist and a man. A loving husband, father, grand and great grandfather, he was adored and will be deeply missed,” his sons Adam, Matthew, and Anthony told CNN. Arkin was born in Brooklyn in 1934 to Russian-German Jewish immigrants, but the family moved to LA when he was a child. His life in entertainment began when he left college to join a band, the Tarriers, in the 1950s. He started experimenting with improv and continued making music until his Broadway debut in the 1963 comedy play 'Enter Laughing.' Arkin landed his first starring role in a movie with the 1966 war comedy 'The Russians Are Coming,' which also earned him his first Oscar nomination. The multi-talented actor, musician, and comedian went on to star in the 1967 film 'Wait Until Dark' opposite Audrey Hepburn, and earned his second Oscar nomination the following year for his role in the movie 'The Heart is a Lonely Hunter.' His 21st-century successes include his Oscar-winning performance in the 2009 movie 'Little Miss Sunshine,' and his starring role in the hit Netflix series 'The Kominsky Method' with Michael Douglas. Arkin's credits are countless, from actor to director to producer. His unique sense of humor, his many talents, and his unparalleled Hollywood legacy won't soon be forgotten.

Ray Stevenson -

British actor Ray Stevenson, who appeared in films like 'Punisher: War Zone,' the Oscar-winning 'RRR', and the 'Thor' trilogy as Volstagg, died on Sunday, May 21, in Italy, at the age of just 58. Though no cause of death has  been confirmed, Stevenson was reportedly hospitalized while filming an action movie, 'Cassino in Ischia,' on the Italian island. Stevenson also had a successful TV career, appearing in shows like 'Rome,' 'Vikings,' 'Murphy's Law,' and 'Dexter,' and he will appear in this summer's Disney+ 'Star Wars' series 'Ahsoka' as a Jedi named Baylon Skoll. Gone too soon, the actor's death was announced four days before his 59th birthday.

Legendary Cleveland Browns running back and civil rights activist Jim Brown passed away on May 18. The Football Hall of Famer shocked the world when he left the sport to pursue acting, and later distinguished himself with his activism. His wife Monique shared the news of his death, stating that he went peacefully at their home. He was 87 years old.

Andy Rourke -

Andy Rourke, founding member of the iconic British rock band The Smiths, was just 59 years old when his death was announced on May 19. "It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Andy Rourke after a lengthy illness with pancreatic cancer," his bandmate and guitarist Johnny Marr shared in a statement. "Andy will be remembered as a kind and beautiful soul by those who knew him and as a supremely gifted musician by music fans. We request privacy at this sad time." The legendary bassist not only played with the Smiths until they disbanded, but continued to play with frontman Morrisey on his solo work Morrissey. Rourke was a member of the supergroup Freebass along with fellow celebrated bassists Peter Hook and Mani. He worked with stars like Sinead O'Connor, the Pretenders, and Ian Brown, and played in the band D.A.R.K. alongside the Cranberries vocalist Dolores O’Riordan until her death in 2018.

The pro wrestler Billy Graham, who went by the name Superstar Billy Graham, passed away on May 17 at the age of 79. The WWE Hall of Famer had been struggling with multiple health issues for several months before his death, including diabetes, multiple infections, and organ failure.

Gordon Lightfoot -

Canadian folk music icon Gordon Lightfoot, whose famed folk hits included 'The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald' and 'Sundown,' died at the age of 84 on the night of May 1, according to his publicist. His death, said to be of natural causes, per CNN, comes less than a month after he canceled his 2023 US and Canada concert schedule. Lightfoot first found success on the pop charts in 1970 with the song 'If You Could Read My Mind,' which also earned him his second of four Grammy nominations. He is hailed as Canada's folk troubadour for his beautiful music and even Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau described Lightfoot as “one of our greatest singer-songwriters” in a tweet expressing his condolences.

Jerry Springer -

The family of TV personality Jerry Springer announced that he died peacefully at home on April 27. Springer was a qualified lawyer who started out his professional life in politics, serving as the mayor of Cincinnati from 1977-1978. He later moved into broadcasting and entertainment, working as a radio host, news anchor, and most famously, television host. His controversial and long-running daytime talk show, 'Jerry Spring,' ran for 27 seasons from 1991 to 2018. It featured members of the public who came on to air their dirty laundry in front of millions of viewers and a live studio audience. Couples confronted each other about infidelities and paternity issues, scripted fights broke out on stage with the ubiquitous security guards on hand to break them up, and Springer was always there with his microphone to fan the flames. He also hosted 'America's Got Talent' for several years and starred in the courtroom reality show 'Judge Jerry' from 2019 to 2022. A spokesperson for Springer's family revealed that he had been diagnosed with pancreatic cancer a few months before his death.

Harry Belafonte -

Legendary singer, actor, and civil rights pioneer Harry Belafonte passed away at the age of 96 on April 25. The biggest Caribbean-American music star of the 20th century, he also lent his talent and charisma to movies like 'Carmen Jones' (1954) and 'Buck and the Preacher' (1972). The latter was directed by and co-starred his good friend Sidney Poitier. Belafonte himself went on to become one of the first black producers in TV and won an Emmy for his show 'Tonight with Belafonte.'

His success across the entertainment industry is only part of his legacy, however. Belafonte was an early champion of the Civil Rights movement and was involved in many of the biggest campaigns and marches in US political history. He was a close confidant of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and became one of the best-known faces standing for social and political justice in the 20th century. Belafonte retired from acting and performing in the early 2000s, although he continued his activism and made a final appearance in Spike Lee's 2018 film 'BlacKkKlansman.' He passed away from congestive heart failure in his Manhattan home on April 25 with his wife by his side. He is survived by daughters Shari, Adrienne, and Gina, his son David, and many grandchildren.

Dame Edna -

One of Australia's greatest comedic icons passed away on April 22. Barry Humphries, best known for his character Dame Edna, died in Sydney at the age of 89 with his wife at his side. His death has been met with outpourings of love and tributes from fellow comedians and fans around the world. Humphries was an accomplished actor, satirist, and performer of every variety, but he will always be remembered in bejeweled glasses and a purple wig. He first came up with the character Dame Edna as far back as the 1950s and she became a household name in Australia, the UK, and beyond. He was also known for playing the lecherous Sir Les Patterson, who is Dame Edna's opposite in every way. “Farewell, Barry Humphries, you comedy genius," Ricky Gervais tweeted in response to the news of his death.

Celebrated dancer and former 'Strictly Come Dancing' judge Len Goodman passed away on April 22 at the age of 78. Goodman had been suffering from bone cancer and died in hospice surrounded by his family. The show's host, Tess Daly, remembered him in a heartfelt tribute as "a beautiful man, genuine, warm and humble, who left an impression on everyone he met."

Mark Sheehan, guitarist and co-founder of the Irish band the Script, died at the age of 46 on April 14. He was reportedly suffering from an undisclosed illness prior to his death. The news was shared in a social media statement from the band: “Much loved husband, father, brother, band mate and friend Mark Sheehan passed away today in hospital after a brief illness. The family and group ask fans to respect their privacy at this tragic time.”

Mary Quant was the biggest name in fashion during the Swinging Sixties. The British designer is credited with popularizing the miniskirt, one of the boldest trends of the era. Her creations became the basis for the mod style that was burgeoning in London at the time, and she was one of Vidal Sassoon's best-known clients! After a career that solidified her as an icon in fashion history, Quant passed away peacefully in her home on April 13 at the impressive age of 93. The V&A Museum, which hosted an exhibition of her work in 2020, paid tribute to the designer on social media shortly after the news broke: "It’s impossible to overstate Quant’s contribution to fashion. She represented the joyful freedom of 1960s fashion, and provided a new role model for young women. Fashion today owes so much to her trailblazing vision."

Michael Lerner -

Michael Lerner has sadly passed away at the age of 81, his nephew Sam Lerner announced on April 9. "We lost a legend last night. It’s hard to put into words how brilliant my uncle Michael was, and how influential he was to me" he wrote on Instagram. Michael Lerner was perhaps best known for his Oscar-nominated performance in the 1991 classic 'Barton Fink,' but also appeared in movies like 'Elf' (2003) and 'Mirror Mirror' (2013), as well as the TV series 'Glee.'

Lance Reddick, most famous for his roles in hit TV series like 'The Wire,' 'Fringe,' and 'Bosch,' and films like the 'John Wick' franchise, was found dead at his LA home on March 17, at the age of just 60. Reddick, who also famously voiced Commander Zavala in the first-person shooter game series 'Destiny,' reportedly died of natural causes, per Variety. After news of his death broke, many 'Destiny' players paid tribute to Reddick by saluting their fallen commander at the location his character could be found in the game.

Robert Blake -

Actor Robert Blake was best known for playing the cockatoo-owning detective in the hit 1970s TV series, 'Baretta.' Blake won Emmys for his performances, appeared in Westerns and crime thrillers, and had a successful career that spanned decades. Blake's impressive legacy was somewhat muddied by the long-lasting accusations that he was involved in his wife's murder. Bonny Lee Bakley was shot and killed in 2001, and Blake was put on trial for her murder in 2003. He was acquitted in 2005, but was later found to be liable for her death in a civil lawsuit. He paid out millions to her children and was left bankrupt. 

Following the trial, many remarked that Blake's acting roles reflected a darkness inside the actor. He played the notorious killer Perry Smith in the 1967 film adaptation of Truman Capote's book, 'In Cold Blood,' and his final film appearance was the terrifying Mystery Man in David Lynch's 'Lost Highway' (1997). In a 2011 interview, Blake remarked, “If I weren’t so sick and so troubled, I might not have been an actor.” Blake reportedly passed away from heart disease at his Los Angeles home on March 9.

Tom Sizemore -

Tom Sizemore, best known for his roles in the famed military action dramas 'Saving Private Ryan' and 'Black Hawk Down,' passed away on March 3, two weeks after suffering a stroke, at the age of just 61. The actor's stroke had led to him being hospitalized with a brain aneurysm, and he remained in critical condition in a coma since February 18. He "passed away peacefully in his sleep," his rep said in a statement, with his brother Paul Sizemore and his 17-year-old twin boys Jayden and Jagger by his side.

Richard Belzer, who was a stand-up comic before becoming a household name for his iconic role as Detective John Munch in 'Homicide: Life on the Street' and 'Law & Order: SVU,' died February 19.
