BAFTAs, 2023 -

An awkward mix-up happened at the BAFTA Awards on February 19 when Carey Mulligan was mistakenly named the winner for Best Supporting Actress instead of the actual winner, Kerry Condon, in what people are calling a "'Moonlight' moment." The error happened when deaf actor and 'CODA' star Troy Kotsur introduced the nominees alongside an off-stage sign language interpreter. The interpreter read out Mulligan’s name to much applause, and a couple seconds later he quickly said: “Kerry Condon…Kerry Condon.” It’s unclear whether the mistake was Kotsur’s or his interpreter’s.

Luckily the moment was cut from the BBC’s coverage, however the interpreter could reportedly be heard saying, "This is a bad moment” after naming the wrong winner, and the awards night host Richard E. Grant joked there was “a defibrillator needed for Carey Mulligan."  Condon accepted the award graciously for her role in 'The Banshees of Inisherin.'

SAG Awards, 2022 -

Michael Keaton missed the big moment he was announced as  winner of the SAG Award for Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Television Movie or Limited Series, and all because he was in the bathroom! Keaton, who won for his role as opioid-addicted Dr. Samuel Finnix in the series 'Dopesick,' ran to the stage, then rolled onto it, and retrieved his statue. “Sorry, quick trip to the men’s room, and it’s packed by the way,” he said, before getting into his acceptance speech.

Some people may have noticed that when Selena Gomez came out to present an award with Martin Short, she wasn't wearing any shoes. Well, that might be because she took them off when she fell ahead of the show!

Golden Globe nominations -

Snoop Dogg presented the nominations for the 2022 Golden Globes on December 13, and he absolutely stole the show. The rapper mispronounced several stars' names, including calling Ben Affleck "Been Afflay," while announcing his nomination for Best Supporting Actor for 'The Tender Bar.' “My fault, sorry, Ben Affleck, sorry for that Ben!” Snoop quickly said. Then when announcing 'Belfast' star Ciarán Hinds in the same category, Snoop said, “Ca-ron, no sorry, Karen Hinds—work with me now!” But the best was certainly how he turned French-Canadian 'Dune' director Denis Villeneuve's name into something that sounded Latino: "Denis Villa-Nueva." Twitter, of course, had a field day. “Snoop Dogg painstakingly mispronouncing the name of every nominee at the #GoldenGlobes, even Ben Affleck, is verging on performance art,” wrote a viewer.

Cannes Film Festival, 2021 -

Cannes Film Festival jury president Spike Lee accidentally announced the winner of the festival's top honor, the Palme d'Or, early. Following a miscommunication with the host, French actress Toria Dillier, Lee prematurely revealed Julia Ducournau's film 'Titane' to be the recipient of this year's Palme d'Or. The audience gasped and Lee realized his error.

Cannes Film Festival, 2021 -

Lee later apologized, saying he "messed up," and added that he apologized to the 'Titane' team, including director Julia Ducournau (only the second female filmmaker to ever be awarded the top honor) who told him not to worry about it. Lee had also returned to the stage before Sharon Stone was scheduled to present the award and said, "In 63 years of life I've learned that people get a second chance, this is my second chance." He added, "It took a lot of suspense out of the night I understand, it wasn't on purpose."

In one of the most shocking moments in award show history, Warren Beatty and Faye Dunaway were tasked with announcing the highest honor of the night at the 2017 Oscars, but they were given the wrong envelope. Instead of 'Moonlight,' they announced Damien Chazelle's 'La La Land' as Best Picture.

The 'La La Land' crew came on stage and started giving their speeches, but about two minutes in, it was clear backstage something was wrong. "There's a mistake," producer Jordan Horowitz said. "'Moonlight,' you guys won Best Picture. This is not a joke." Then Barry Jenkins' 'Moonlight' cast and crew made their way to the stage as everyone else backed off awkwardly.

Miss Universe, 2015 -

In a mistake of universal proportions, contest host Steve Harvey accidentally announced Miss Colombia, Ariadna Gutiérrez, as the winner in 2015. She wore the sash and crown for a full minute until Harvey realized a terrible mistake had been made.

Back when 'Frozen' was all the rage, Broadway star Idina Menzel was preparing to perform 'Let It Go' at the Oscars. But when John Travolta went up to introduce her, he called her "the wickedly talented, one and only Adele Dazeem." The internet will never forget.

He strikes again! After the Adele Dazeem fiasco, Travolta was tasked with awarding Taylor Swift the prestigious Video of the Year award for 'You Need to Calm Down.' But with a large group joining Swift on stage, Travolta got confused and mistook RuPaul's Drag Race contestant Jade Jolie for Swift, attempting to hand the blonde drag queen the award instead.

MTV VMAs, 2002 - In 2002, the MTV Video Music Awards took place on Michael Jackson's birthday. Britney Spears had the honor of calling him on stage to receive a cake, but while doing so she told the audience she considered him to be the "artist of the millennium." He then came on stage and accepted the non-existent award for Artist of the Millennium, speech and all.

Someone was surely fired after the Oscars' In Memoriam segment in 2017. Tributes were paid to Australian costume designer Janet Patterson, who had worked on films including 'The Piano' and 'The Portrait of a Lady,' but the picture used under her name was that of Jan Chapman (pictured), an Australian film producer who is very much alive. What a shock that must have been for her!

Billboard Music Awards, 2014 -

Kendall Jenner had the cringiest time trying to read her lines at the 2014 Billboard Music Awards. She even appeared to try to duck out of the frame when she struggled to introduce 5 Seconds of Summer, who were supposed to be getting their big American debut on the show. Instead, she started to introduce One Direction, then froze. "Guys, I'm the worst reader," she said with an embarrassed laugh before stumbling some more.

While announcing the Best Supporting Actress category at the 2017 Golden Globes, Michael Keaton incorrectly said 'Hidden Fences,' mixing up the names of 'Fences' and 'Hidden Figures,' which both happen to be movies with all-Black lead stars. He later apologized for offending people.

Singer Katy Perry looked so happy as she accepted the award for Best International Song for 'I Kissed a Girl' during France's 2009 NRJ Music Awards. That made it worse when it was revealed the award was actually meant for Rihanna and her song 'Disturbia.'

At the 2011 BET Awards, contest winner Tiffany Green was given the opportunity to announce the year's Viewer's Choice Award. She announced Chris Brown as the winner, then corrected herself and announced that it was actually Brown's ex, Rihanna, who had won. Drake then accepted the award on RiRi's behalf, which made the situation no less awkward given their rumored romance.

At the 1985 Oscars, legendary actor Laurence Olivier was tasked with announcing the award for Best Picture. But instead of listing the nominees like everyone usually does, Olivier just opened the envelope and declared 'Amadeus' the winner. Luckily, producer Saul Zaentz paid tribute to the four other nominees while accepting the award.

When announcing the winner of Outstanding Guest Actor in a Drama Series, Ron Cephas Jones's name appeared on screen for his role in 'This Is Us.' However, Jason Bateman was announced as the winner for his guest appearance in 'The Outsider.' After an ad break, the mistake was rectified and Cephas Jones was named the real winner.

'The X Factor,' 2015 - Host Olly Murs actually announced the wrong loser while presenting 'The X Factor' in 2015. He incorrectly announced that Monica Michael would be sent home after miscounting the votes from the four judges. It was actually tied two-two and it went down to the public vote. Though Monica Michael lost anyway, Murs said he went to therapy because of the backlash.

Golden Globe Awards, 2001 -

At the 2001 Golden Globe Awards, legendary actress Elizabeth Taylor was announcing the winner for Best Motion Picture - Drama, but before she announced the nominees she started ripping open the envelope. The crowd yelled to get her to stop. "I'm new at this!" she called out in response. The producer then came out on stage to save the day.

Academy Awards, 1964 -

Legendary musician Sammy Davis Jr. was in charge of reading the award for Best Scoring of Music at the Academy Awards in 1964, and opened the envelope to announce that John Addison was the winner for 'Tom Jones.' After confused murmurs spread, Davis realized that he'd been given the wrong envelope, one for a different category. "Wait until the NAACP hears about this," he joked. The mistake was corrected, with André Previn's score for 'Irma la Douce' taking home the award.

Jennifer Lawrence's most iconic award show moment was also her most public blunder. She tripped over her gown on her way to receive her Oscar for 'Silver Linings Playbook,' then joked in her speech: "You guys are just standing up because you feel bad that I fell and it's really embarrassing."

Eurovision, 2007 -

After the UK public voted to decide whether pop group Scooch or solo singer Cyndi would represent the UK at the 2007 Eurovision Song Contest, hosts Sir Terry Wogan and Fearne Cotton simultaneously announced different winners live on air. Moments later, Cotton clarified that Scooch had indeed won the public vote. A BBC statement later apologized for the blunder, but confirmed Scooch would be representing the UK at the contest that year.

Rolling Stones guitarist Ronnie Wood and 'American Beauty' actress Thora Birch were in the middle of presenting the best soundtrack award to the film 'Notting Hill' when DJ Brandon Block stumbled on stage believing he had won. Block was manhandled by security and Wood even threw his drink over him.

RnB trio WSTRN enjoyed being recipients of the Best Song award for one whole hour at the 2016 MOBO ceremony before it was revealed that the award was meant to go to MC Abra Cadabra. Hosts Rickie Williams and Melvin Odoom announced the error, explaining "someone picked up the wrong envelope."

NME Awards, 2020 -

British rapper Slowthai made inappropriate comments to host Katherine Ryan during his acceptance speech for the Hero of the Year. When an audience member shouted "misogynist," he angrily said the fan "ruined his speech" then threw the microphone into the audience, only for it to be thrown back with a wine glass. The rapper then threw his own glass into the crowd, jumped off the stage, and attempted to fight the fan. He later apologized to Ryan for his comments.

Australia's Next Top Model, 2010 -

With a live crowd watching, 'Australia's Next Top Model' host Sarah Murdoch (second from right) announced that contestant Kelsey Martinovich (left) had won the reality show title. After Martinovich's tears of joy and heartfelt thanks, a pale-faced Murdoch interrupted her ecstatic moment to apologize and announce that it was actually Amanda Ware (right) who was the winner.

"I don't know what to say right now," Murdoch told the finalists and the crowd of about 2,000 people. "I'm feeling a bit sick about this. I'm so sorry about this, oh my God. I don't know what to say. This is a complete accident, I'm so sorry. It's Amanda ... it was read to me wrong."
