While pure velvet made from silk is quite rare these days, the fabric in its more sustainable form (made with synthetic and natural fibers) is still a fashion favorite. Super soft and of an exquisite appearance, velvet was once a luxurious fabric reserved for those of the higher ranks of society. It spread from the East to Europe, and the rest is history. Today, velvet is not just worn by royals and members of the clergy. Instead, it became an accessible fabric for most people, though it never reached the popularity of other fabrics, such as plain cotton.
