She opened up in a rare moment in March 2021
- In a post on Instagram at the end of March, Spears opened up about why she was hesitant to watch the doc. "My life has always been very speculated...watched...and judged really my whole life," she wrote. "It takes a lot of strength to TRUST the universe with your real vulnerability cause I've always been so judged... insulted... and embarrassed by the media... and I still am till this day." Though she didn't watch the doc in full, she wrote, "From what I did see of it I was embarrassed by the light they put me in...I cried for two weeks and well....I still cry sometimes."

What is a conservatorship? - In the US, a conservatorship is a legal concept in which a guardian or a protector is appointed by a judge to manage the financial affairs and/or daily life of another due to physical or mental limitations or old age.

It started as crisis prevention - Britney Spears was reportedly put under conservatorship to prevent her from making poor financial and business decisions while dealing with some mental health issues which had, at the time, caused her to lose custody of her two sons, shave her head, and go to rehab.

But 12 years later, the conservatorship is still there - Britney Spears still has no legal control over her financial and business affairs, even though since 2008 she has been mentally capable enough to drop albums, make music videos, do world tours, create her own million-dollar perfume line, appear as a judge on ‘The X Factor,’ and land a residency in Las Vegas between 2013 and 2017.

The conservator has a lot of power - According to ABC, the conservator decides where the conservatee will live, makes arrangements for their meals, health care, clothing, personal care, housekeeping, transportation, recreation and well-being. Conservators of their estate also collect their income, pay their bills, and take control of all their assets. This legal action is typically reserved for the elderly, severely disabled, or those in a coma.

The status of the conservatorship right now
- Her father temporarily stepped down from conservator in September 2019 due to his own health reasons, and Jodi Montgomery, Britney’s longtime care manager, stepped in. In late August, a judge ruled that Britney’s conservatorship would be extended until February 1, 2021. Furthermore, Jamie took over again, despite Britney requesting that Montgomery stay in the role.

#FreeBritney: Everything you need to know about the 'conspiracy'
Spears finally addresses the court and asks to end the "abusive" conservatorship
©
Getty Images

A movement has formed, largely without the involvement of the Princess of Pop herself, calling to #FreeBritney from the legal shackles placed on her when she was at her lowest. For a decade now, fans have been growing increasingly concerned for her health and safety, particularly after having been placed under a legal conservatorship since 2008, giving her father power over all her finances. Theories have since been circulating the Internet due to the strange content the singer has been posting on social media, and other celebrities, as well as her family members, have made comments about the growing movement.
The conservatorship has been a hot topic as the court decided her father will remain as her conservator despite the fact that she has made it clear she does not want him to be, and interest in her case has only increased with the bombshell documentary 'Framing Britney Spears.'
On June 23, Spears finally had the chance to speak for her herself. Breaking years of silence, the pop star addressed the court directly in a public hearing. Her 20 minute speech revealed her anguish and suffering, and gave a withering criticism of the conservatorship. Spears described the situation as abusive and told the judge that she cries every day. "After I've lied and told the whole world I'm OK and I'm happy...I'm not OK. I'm not happy, I can't sleep." She claimed that she had been forced to take lithium, a medication used to treat bipolar disorder, against her will, and had been subjected to countless other traumatizing indignities.
Spears stated that her father and his team had already exploited her enough and taken away her rights. She said she wanted to take a break from work because she'd been working all her life. Spears also said that she wanted to marry her long-term boyfriend, Sam Asghari, and have another baby, but the conservatorship didn't allow her the choice to have her IUD removed. Spears ultimately requested that the conservatorship is finally ended, without her needing further evaluation.
The #FreeBritney movement started out as a conspiracy theory, but it looks like the reality is worse than anyone expected. Click through to find out all the details.
