Fame and fortune have always held unique caveats for Hollywood stars, whether it be the pressures of audiences, the invasion of privacy, or the stress of never being able to live a "normal" life again. Many resort to substance abuse to take the edge off, but get lost and struggle to find their way back.
One Direction's Liam Payne is opening up about his sobriety journey, as he shared an eight-minute video on YouTube on July 8 where he revealed he's now nearly six months sober after spending nearly 100 days in a rehab facility in Louisiana.
"I just kind of feel like I've got more of a grip on life and everything that was getting away from me, I just feel like I've got more of a handle on it," the 29-year-old English singer said. "I just needed to take a little bit of time out for myself actually because I kind of became somebody who I didn't really recognize anymore. And I'm sure you guys didn't either. I was in bad shape up until that point and I was really happy to kind of put a stopper to life and work."
Payne shared that in rehab he completely unplugged. "I didn't have my phone for nearly 100 days. I didn't connect with the outside world at all. Upon leaving, the hardest part was turning the phone back on because it was a little bit scary." He has been open up about his struggles with mental illness and addiction in the past, which started in his teens and even made him suicidal at times. After a decade, he made the brave step towards recovery and he seems to be doing well. "It's good, it's good to be in this position," he said. "I definitely don't need those things anymore. The party's over."
