The Chanel suit
For a long time, suits were only reserved for men. With time, they became a symbol of freedom and power, especially in the 1920s, when women slowly started to adopt the style. For instance, Katharine Hepburn was one of the first famous women in Hollywood to wear trousers. In 1925, French designer Gabrielle "Coco" Chanel introduced her first iconic suit, which was a simple boxy jacket in tweed. But it became one of the most famous silhouettes in Europe and was dubbed "the Chanel suit." The suit became even more famous in the 1960s, after Jackie Kennedy wore it on the day her husband was killed. Chanel reportedly would wear her lover's clothes and said they were more comfortable than women's clothing of the time. Until today, the fashion house is known for mixing masculinity and femininity in their clothing.
The power suit
The power suit surely came a long way. With strong female political figures such as Margaret Thatcher and Hillary Clinton proving that trouser suits are, indeed, powerful, the female suit has seen a rise in the last decades, and has been adopted by numerous celebrities in Hollywood (and even by royals).
