Where would pop stars like Drake and Beyoncé be without their fans? Nowhere, is the right answer, since loyal fans are the ones who will follow artists to the grave. Though fan bases are nothing new, the modern era has revolutionized interaction between artist and fan. These days, pop icons can keep in regular contact with their followers on the world wide web. Platforms like Twitter, TikTok, and Instagram are the most effective for reaching millions of fans around the world.
Things weren't always like this of course. Way back when, Beatlemania was the biggest craze in pop music. Fans of The Beatles flocked to their concerts around the world, screaming their lungs out at the highest pitch possible. If you thought an Ariana Grande concert was scary, just check out the Beatles's performance on 'The Ed Sullivan Show.' Then there's the Deadheads, an enduring fanbase that has followed the Grateful Dead from show-to-show since the '70s.
It's safe to say fans have gotten a lot closer to artists over the years, or so it seems. Ariana Grande and Nicki Minaj can reach their fans within seconds, which has its positives and negatives too. Fans can support their favorite artist, streaming their single to number one. They can also be put on to charitable causes, with many popular artists using their social media platform for good.
However, this also means that fans are quick to defend their artistic icon, spouting hateful comments and cyber attacking anyone who they feel insults the star—whether real or imagined. This was what recently happened with the Beyhive, Beyoncé's loyal fanbase, who were sure to defend the singer from a supposed slight.
