Cristiano Ronaldo: A controversial superstar
The soccer legend has reached a record 900 career goals
© Getty Images
Cristiano Ronaldo is widely considered to be one of the best soccer players of his generation, if not of all time. The last year has been dramatic for him as he cut short his second season at Manchester United, played in what was likely his final World Cup, and signed a 2.5-year contract with the Saudi Arabian club Al Nassr.
On June 20th, he became the first male player to reach 200 international appearances, and he celebrated that milestone by scoring the winning goal (and the only goal) in the 89th minute as Portugal beat Iceland 1-0 in a European Championship qualifier. "For me it's an unbelievable achievement, it's amazing," the 39-year-old said of his 123rd international goal in his 200th game. "And of course to score the winning goal, it's even more special."
Less than three months later, on September 5, he became the world's top goal scorer, reaching the 900 career goals milestone.
Whether you think of him as an arrogant celeb or a brilliant soccer star, you just can't ignore him! CR7 is not only successful on the field—he also lives a striking life outside of it. A life, however, that is certainly not free of scandal.
