Everyone at the Cannes Film Festival is talking about Johnny Depp's return, as his premiere of 'Jeanne du Barry' opened the festival on May 16. Still, earlier that day, Brie Larson was surprised to be the one asked about it in a press conference.
The reporter mentioned that she was an outspoken advocate for Time's Up and #MeToo and asked what she thought about Depp's film opening the festival and whether she planned to see it. Larson replied, "You’re asking me that? I’m sorry, I don’t understand the correlation or why me specifically." The journalist clarified that he asked because she was on the celebrity advisory council for Time's Up and the Johnny Depp case has drawn controversy around the new film's appearance at Cannes.
"Well, you’ll see, I guess, if I will see it," Larson replied. "And I don’t know how I’ll feel about it if I do.” Depp's film is not playing in competition, so as a juror Larson was not actually required to see it, but as it opened the festival, she was indeed present later that evening. Some believe that Larson's response, though awkward, was either a rejection of the fact that the question was only posed to the woman present, or an attempt to avoid being used as a target for scrutiny online.
The first rule in interviewing a celebrity is having your facts straight, and the second is having at least some degree of etiquette. Here is a gallery full of interviewers who apparently weren't informed of the rules, and the stars that gloriously fired back at them for it.
