Literal inspiration - ‘Hamilton’ is an on-stage adaptation of the 2004 biography ‘Alexander Hamilton’, written by Ron Chernow. The Pulitzer Prize-winning author crafted what’s considered a landmark biography of the Founding Father.

Literal inspiration - Chernow’s book caught the attention of American playwright and composer Lin-Manuel Miranda. Miranda read Chernow’s biography on holiday in 2008. Speaking to Rolling Stone, Lin-Manuel noted: “This story is more delicious and tragic and interesting than anything I could have made up.”

Attention to detail - Miranda was inspired by the book, and began working on ‘The Hamilton Mixtape’. Famed for his musical ‘In the Heights’, Miranda was invited to perform songs at The White House. Instead, Miranda performed the mixtape’s opener ‘Alexander Hamilton’.

Attention to detail - Miranda grew obsessive over the compositions early on. After the White House performance, he reworked his song ‘My Shot’ for a year, perfecting Alexander Hamilton’s intellect.

Early days - ‘Hamilton’’s world premiere Off-Broadway was at The Public Theater, New York City. The sold-out show was a glowing success, with rave reviews from the Associated Press and The New York Times.

Early days - As a result, ‘Hamilton’’s Off-Broadway production at the Public's Newman Theater ran an additional four weeks through May 3. The extended engagement was originally scheduled through April 5.

Success - On Broadway, ‘Hamilton’ began previewing at the Richard Rodgers Theatre in July 2015. Officially opening one month later, the production got high praise. The New York Times commented that ‘Hamilton’ garnered “the kind of worshipful press usually reserved for the appearances of once-in-a-lifetime comets or the births of little royal celebrities.”

Success - The show was a hit with audiences too. Over 700 people queued up for lottery tickets for the opening night. By mid July, the show had sold over 200,000 tickets, with sales up there with the biggest pre-opening totals in history.

Award-winning - ‘Hamilton’’s success knows no bounds. It scooped up 11 wins at the 70th Tony Awards (awards that celebrate Broadway productions). The musical also won the 2016 Grammy Award for Best Musical Theater Album and the 2016 Pulitzer Prize for Drama.

Award-winning - Before it even made its way to Broadway ‘Hamilton’ was racking up trophies. The off-Broadway production won the 2015 Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Musical, along with seven other awards.

Presidential performances - ‘Hamilton’ hit a landmark when Lin-Manuel Miranda returned to The White House. On March 14, 2016, cast members joined Lin-Manuel to perform and host workshops.

Presidential performances - The musical received high praise from the then-first family. Michelle Obama noted that the musical was “the best piece of art in any form that I have ever seen in my life.” whilst Obama even joined the performance by holding up prompts for Lin-Manuel.

Royal roles - Miranda has expressed his excitement at bringing ‘Hamilton’ to the UK, especially with the character of King George III. "I'm very curious to see how you guys react to King George III in the show.” he told The Press Association, adding: “[Victoria Palace Theatre] is in the shadow of Buckingham Palace so I'm very curious to see how that goes over."

Royal roles - George III, who will be portrayed by Michael Jibson, is something of a fan favourite. Talking to The Press Association, Miranda revealed “When Busta Rhymes saw the show he said 'I need that outfit".

Some delays - Hamilton’s London production was stalled by delays earlier in September 2017. Ticketholders were left in limbo, with producer Cameron Mackintosh putting the delay down to building works.

Some delays - The delays hit 16,000 ticket holders who were going to the first fortnight of previews. Miranda told The Press Association: "It's frustrating. I share the frustration of everyone who had to get re-seated". The first preview was rescheduled to 6 December.

Who's who? - The cast is full of wildcards. Alexander Hamilton is played by Jamael Westman. The graduate from RADA (Royal Academy of Dramatic Art) had only two other professional stage credits to his name.

Who's who? - Westman is joined by Giles Terera as Aaron Burr, Rachelle Ann Go as Eliza Schuyler Hamilton, Rachel John as Angelica Schuyler and Obioma Ugoala as George Washington. Most of the main cast are alumni from RADA (The Royal Academy of Dramatic Art).

Two thumbs up - Reviews for the show have been overwhelmingly positive. In a review for The Daily Mail, Baz Bamigboye remarked that it was "the best first preview of a musical [he'd] seen since Miss Saigon".

Two thumbs up - In a review for The Telegraph, journalist Veronica Lee acknowledged that the show "went without a hitch". More adoring praise is sure to come in the following weeks.

Crowd pleaser - Hamilton is also a hit with London’s crowds. Despite the two weeks delay, the performance went a treat and left the crowd on their feet. On Twitter, Tim Bradbeer (@timbradbeer) commented “[there’s] no point seeing any more theatre after that. I’ve officially peaked".

Crowd pleaser - Daniel Lewis (@bigdannylewis) also commented on Twitter, saying “ it literally blew my mind. The most astonishing piece of theatre I've ever seen. Remortgage your house and get a ticket, it's that good".

Ticket scalpers - The show is almost too successful in London. Producers introduced a paperless ticketing system to fend off touts and ticket scalpers. Delfont Mackintosh Theatres announced the system, remarking it’s "to combat the unauthorised profiteering of third party resellers".

Ticket scalpers - Priority tickets went on sale on January 16, with general tickets selling two weeks after. Delfont Mackintosh Theatres added that the process was “to protect patrons from paying highly inflated prices".

Hamilton hiatus? - Miranda will not star in the production during its West End run, but he is not on a ‘Hamilton’ hiatus. He is expected to reprise his role for a three-week tenure in Puerto Rico in January 2019.
