A 37-year-old Australian woman was seriously injured in a shark attack off North Bimini in the Bahamas on September 14. She was taking part in a dolphin excursion about three nautical miles from the island when the incident occurred.
The woman suffered “serious injuries” to her right ankle, according to Bahamian police. She was taken to the Bimini Community Clinic shortly after 5:30 pm (local time) before being airlifted to New Providence for further treatment. Police said the investigation remains ongoing.
The Bahamas are home to around 40 shark species, including great hammerheads, oceanic whitetip, and bull sharks. Caribbean reef sharks are among the most common species found in the waters around the islands.
