Few philosophers have had the impact of Plato. Born in ancient Greece, this student of Socrates grew to be one of the foundational figures of Western philosophical thought. Plato's Academy was the precursor of the modern-day university, and his teachings, sometimes referred to as "Platonic idealism" live on to this day.
