After two years of marriage, Jolie files for divorce citing "irreconcilable differences," and requesting sole custody of the children.

Although it wasn't reported until years later in 2022, in September 2016 on their return to LA from a family trip, an argument took place between Pitt and Jolie on their private plane.
Jolie writes the script for the movie 'Beside the Sea' (2014), which she and Pitt co-star in together. It's the first time the couple play opposite each other since 'Mr. and Mrs. Smith.'
In February 2008, it's announced Jolie is pregnant again. Later in May, at the Cannes Film Festival, she shares the surprise that the couple are, unexpectedly, expecting twins.
In 2010, the News of the World reports that Pitt and Jolie split earlier in the year. The couple sue the newspaper, and win.
In the report from the incident, it was claimed that Pitt grabbed and shook Jolie, punched the ceiling of the plane repeatedly, and spilled wine and beer on the children and Jolie. No criminal charges were pursued.
In April 2012, it's reported that Jolie has been seen wearing a US$1 million engagement ring from Pitt.
Pitt filed for joint custody of his children, but in December Jolie was granted sole custody. Pitt was allowed visits with the children, arranged under the supervision of their therapist.

While Jolie is filming 'Maleficent' in London, a custody agreement is reached between the couple. The agreement gives Pitt unsupervised phone calls and texts, and visitation rights.
In 2009, Ian Halperin's book 'Brangelina: The Untold Story of Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie' is released, which alleges Pitt cheated on Jolie.
Although their divorce was not yet finalized, Pitt and Jolie were declared by a judge as having single status by "bifurcation," allowing them to file taxes separately.
In July 2005 the new couple, who would earn the nickname Brangelina, pose for W Magazine in a shoot entitled 'Domestic Bliss.' Pitt later accompanies Jolie on a trip to Ethiopia to adopt her second child, Zahara.
For the first time since filing for divorce, the FBI report about the altercation on the plane between Pitt and Jolie becomes public.
As disputes over Chateau Miraval continued to rumble on, details emerge that accuse Pitt of abuse before the plane incident in 2016. Jolie's lawyers wrote in April: "While Pitt’s history of physical abuse of Jolie started well before the family’s September 2016 plane trip from France to Los Angeles, this flight marked the first time he turned his physical abuse on the children as well. Jolie then immediately left him."
The Department of Child and Family Services investigated Pitt after the divorce filing. He was cleared of any wrongdoing in November 2016.
In January 2006, just three months after the finalization of Pitt's divorce from Aniston, the new couple announce they're expecting their first biological child together.
In July 2008, Jolie gives birth to the twins in Nice, France. One month later, Knox and Vivienne make their debut on the cover of People.
The same month, a judge grants the request to change Jolie's children's surname's to Jolie-Pitt. Soon afterward comes the finalization of Pitt's adoption of the children.
In March 2007, Jolie and Pitt travel to Vietnam to adopt three-year-old Pax. Their clan now comes to a total of four.
In a tentative ruling, Pitt is awarded joint custody of the children in May 2021. Several months later, the decision is disqualified on appeal. It transpires the judge in the case had a business relationship with Pitt that was not disclosed before the original ruling.
The site of the Jolie-Pitt nuptials in 2004, Chateau Miraval, a €25 million (US$27.2 million) purchase by the couple, becomes a contentious issue between Pitt and Jolie in 2021.
Eventually, Pitt agrees to buy Jolie out, however, disputes over custody of the children re-emerge. Instead, Jolie ultimately sells her share to a Russian oligarch, Yuri Shefler, for US$67 million.
Pitt claims he wasn't told that Jolie wanted to sell her share, which she disputes. She claims due to its focus on alcohol, she wants to sell her part of the estate.
In June 2024, it was reported that Shiloh, upon turning 18, removed 'Pitt' from her surname. Pitt stated he was "aware and upset" by the change.
