Many famous personalities have opened up about their struggles with mental health. Indeed, there are many celebrities who have been vocal about these matters and do make an effort to raise awareness. Some of these stars have also experienced episodes in their lives that led them to check into mental health facilities, both willingly and involuntarily.

In 2017, the late singer shared on social media that she has had considered taking her own life more than once. Sinéad O'Connor, who struggled with bipolar disorder, spent some time in a mental health institution.
The Irish singer later opened up about her struggle with mental health. "What kicked all of this off really was, I had a radical hysterectomy in Ireland two years ago and I lost my mind after that... I became very suicidal. I was a basket case. After the hysterectomy, I was mental."
Best known for playing Princess Leia in the 'Star Wars' franchise, the late actress struggled with both drug addiction and mental illness. Fisher was diagnosed with bipolar disorder in 1985, and checked into mental health facilities a number of times throughout her life.
"I have a chemical imbalance that, in its most extreme state, will lead me to a mental hospital. I used to think I was a drug addict, pure and simple—just someone who could not stop taking drugs willfully. And I was that. But it turns out that I am severely manic depressive," she explained in an interview.
In 2010, Demi Lovato checked into a rehab center, where she stayed for three months. The actress and singer was then diagnosed with bipolar disorder and bulimia.
Lovato has since been working to raise awareness about mental health. "Entering rehab while you're on the Disney Channel, it was kind of like, everything was magnified, in the spotlight. It's quite the headline. And I couldn't get around it. So I thought, you know, I can use this to help others. And that's what I did," she said.
Winona Ryder checked into a mental health hospital in 1990 due to anxiety. "I was scared I might do something stupid... They put me in the psychiatric ward... It was very scary, very real," said the actress.
Ryder struggled to prepare for her role in 'Girl, Interrupted' (1999), which is set in a psychiatric facility. "I was terrified to play a character who was full of fear and anxiety knowing that I have been full of fear and anxiety, and it's not something that's just past tense for me. It's something you battle with your whole life," she explained.
The iconic blonde bombshell had a very successful career, but also a troubled personal life. In 1960, Monroe was committed to the Payne Whitney Psychiatric Clinic in New York. She left four days later, and in 1962 she died of a barbiturate overdose.
In 2001, Mariah Carey had a meltdown on MTV's 'Total Request Live' and it was downhill from there, leading the singer to post on her website the message: "So basically all I really want to say is I don't know what's going on with life."
In July 2001, the singer checked into Northern Westchester Hospital and was later transferred to Silver Hill Mental Hospital in Connecticut. Carrey's publicist initially claimed "extreme exhaustion" as the reason, but later admitted that the singer suffered an "emotional and physical breakdown."
In 2016, the actress spent 47 days in a treatment center to deal with "depression, isolation and co-dependent relationships." The treatment had a great impact on Judd's life. "Now, even when I'm having a rough day, it's better than my best day before treatment," she said.
"I went into that treatment center and I proceeded to fall apart... By the grace of God and the tools they gave me, I have been made new, I have been made whole and I have come back together in a way that is a standard-bearer for my entire family," she added.
Britney Spears suffered a (very public) breakdown in January 2008. The pop star was held for a couple of days for mental evaluation, and later was eventually admitted into a Los Angeles psychiatric hospital.
The singer was released seven days after checking in, and Spears' father was named her conservator, as she was deemed incapable of managing her personal and financial affairs. The conservatorship was terminated in 2021.
The famous rapper is no stranger to bizarre behavior, but in 2016 West was actually hospitalized for a psychiatric evaluation at the UCLA Medical Center. Abuse of prescription medication has been pointed to as the cause.
Yoko Ono was committed to a mental health hospital in 1962. Ono was diagnosed with clinical depression.
The Welsh actress has been struggling with bipolar II disorder for a long time. In 2011, after the stress of dealing with her husband Michael Douglas' battle with throat cancer, the actress checked into a mental health facility.
Catherine Zeta-Jones later opened up about the episode. "[Bipolar] is something I have been dealing with for a long time... When you get sideswiped like that [with Douglas's illness] it's an obvious trigger for your balance to be a little bit off—not sleeping, worry, stress. It's a classic trigger...I know I'm not the only person who suffers with it or has to deal with it on a day-to-day basis. So if I've helped anybody by discussing bipolar or depression, that's great," she said.
The actor may play funny characters, but there is nothing funny about him being taken to St. John's Hospital in Santa Monica after attempting to take his own life back in 2007. Wilson was then transferred to Cedars Sinai in LA.
After being taken to hospital, Owen Wilson released a statement that read: "I respectfully ask that the media allow me to receive care and heal in private during this difficult time."
The Aerosmith front man's battle with addiction is well known. In the 1980s, Tyler checked into McLean Hospital's East House. McLean Hospital has had several famous patients over the years, including singer-songwriters Ray Charles and Rick James, as well as poet Sylvia Plath.
The former member of Take That found huge success as a solo artist, but in 2007 the singer's struggle with addiction and depression led him to check himself into the Meadows Clinic in Arizona.
In 2009, the actress was admitted to Cedars-Sinai Medical Center's psychiatric ward, after threatening to take her own life.
Barton later opened up about the situation. "It was a full-on breakdown... Straight out of 'Girl, Interrupted'...I was deeply hurt at first, and then I accepted this was time I needed to be away from my family and all the pressure," she said.
The actress was involuntarily committed to a California mental health facility in 2014. Bynes reportedly claimed that "a 'microchip' in her brain led her to falsely accuse her dad of sexual abuse."
The famous comedian was institutionalized for eight months at Utah State Hospital following a traumatic brain injury she sustained as a result of a car accident. The injury affected her behavior radically.
The Broadway star spent a month in a mental health facility after attempting to take her own life during her time in college at Juilliard.
"[Juilliard] had a mental health facilitator there, a therapist there and they checked me into a mental health hospital where I was for a month and got me the help I needed," recalled the actress and singer.
The TV personality and former Playboy Playmate was taken to the hospital when she was 15, after ingesting a number of pills.
Years later, Wilkinson opened up about the experience. "It was crazy in that place... We didn't see daylight. We weren't allowed outside. It was basically a jail, but it was a hospital...I think it made me worse because in my heart I didn't want to change... People were forcing me, and that's something that does not work with me."
Singer-songwriter James Taylor was yet another McLean Hospital patient. He was admitted during his high school senior year to treat depression. James Taylor's song 'Knockin' Round the Zoo' was reportedly about his experience in the psychiatric hospital in Belmont, Massachusetts.
