Malignant hyperthermia (MH) is a rare, life-threatening clinical syndrome of hypermetabolism involving the skeletal muscle. Put more simply, MH is a type of severe reaction that occurs in response to particular medications used during general anesthesia. Current estimates suggest that MH occurs in one in 5,000 to 50,000 instances in which people are given anesthetic gases, the only way to make sure you're not susceptible to this little-known condition is to undergo a series of tests.
