The CDC has confirmed the first case of the clade Ib mpox subtype in the US. It has also been circulating in other countries, such as Germany, India, Kenya, Sweden, Thailand, Zimbabwe, and the United Kingdom. Originally, the clade I outbreak took place in Africa, contributing to the development of subclade Ib later on.
So far, no deaths from the travel-associated new strain have been reported. Health officials observe that more recent outbreaks of I mpox have extremely low death rates ranging around 1%, as long as the patients receive the required medical care and support, therefore significantly reducing the risk of severe illness in countries with well-developed healthcare systems.
As the number of mpox cases is rising in Africa, the World Health Organization will hold a meeting of its emergency committee on November 22 to assess whether the current outbreak poses a significant public health threat to the international community.
