In her early teens, Ingrid also lost her father. She eventually ended up in the care of a uncle and his family. By now blossoming into a young woman, Ingrid Bergman decided on an acting career. She first appeared on screen as an uncredited extra in the film 'Landskamp' (1932). The following year she was accepted into the Royal Dramatic Theatre of Stockholm as a scholarship student.

Bergman was no stranger to theater. In 1947, she'd appeared in 'Joan of Lorraine' on Broadway, for which she won a Tony Award for Best Leading Actress in a Play. The following year she reprised the role for Victor Fleming's 'Joan of Arc,' earning another Oscar nod for Best Actress.
The following year Bergman triumphed in the psychological thriller 'Gaslight,' picking up the Academy Award for Best Actress. Directed by George Cukor, the film costars French actor Charles Boyer.

She was lured back to cinema in 1974 for Sidney Lumet's 'Murder of the Orient Express,' based on the 1934 novel of the same name by Agatha Christie. A commercial and critical success, Bergman won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress—her third Oscar—and her first and only BAFTA. Bergman was on the cusp of a successful "third act" in life when she was given devastating news.
Another Academy Award for Best Actress nomination followed Bergman's appearance in the musical comedy-drama 'Bells of St. Mary's.' Starring opposite Bing Crosby, she collected a Golden Globe as consolation.
In 1980, Bergman's autobiography, 'Ingrid Bergman: My Story,' was published. The following year and now quite ill, Ingrid Bergman was persuaded out of retirement to portray former Israeli prime minister Golda Meir in the television biopic 'A Woman Called Golda' (pictured). The film premiered on April 26, 1982. The actress was nominated a second time for an Emmy Award, and a fourth Golden Globe. Both were awarded posthumously.
Throughout the 1960s, Ingrid Bergman divided her professional life between cinema, television, and stage work. She'd appeared in 'The Turn of the Screw' in 1960, a television movie directed by John Frankenheimer and based on the homonymous novel by Henry James. For this performance she won her first Emmy Award, for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Limited Series or Television Movie.
Early American film work eventually led to one of her most famous roles, that of Ilsa Lund in 'Casablanca' opposite Humphrey Bogart. 'Casablanca' remains one of the most celebrated pictures in cinema history.
Many were surprised when the Academy overlooked Bergman's work in 'Casablanca.' As if to make up for the oversight, she was subsequently nominated for Best Actress after appearing in 'For Whom the Bell Tolls,' costarring Gary Cooper.
By now an in-demand leading lady, Bergman enjoyed some of her greatest achievements in the 1940s, which are considered her golden years. Her next film was another psychological thriller, 'Spellbound.' This picture, however, was directed by the master of suspense himself, Alfred Hitchcock. It was the first of three collaborations she had with the British director, the other two being 'Notorious' (1946) and 'Under Capricorn' (1949). Her co-star in 'Spellbound' was Gregory Peck.
Bergman married Rossellini (pictured) by proxy after she gave birth to their son, Renato. She went on to have twin daughters with the director, Isotta and Isabella, the latter to become a famed actress herself. The scandal rocked Hollywood and the repercussions were felt abroad, especially in Sweden where the conservative press demonized the actress.
In London, Bergman worked with British actors Trevor Howard, Michael Redgrave, and Ralph Richardson on a 1962 television adaptation of Henrik Ibsen's 'Hedda Gabler.' Three years later, she would again appear alongside Redgrave in the West End stage production of 'A Month in the Country.'
As the 1960s drew to a close, Bergman, in a rare comedy venture, costarred with Walter Matthau and Goldie Hawn in 'Cactus Flower,' for which Hawn won an Academy Award for her performance.
Further stage work kept Bergman in England into the 1970s (she's pictured here riding a bicycle through London in 1974). She also worked in theater in New York, Los Angeles, and Washington, D.C.
On July 10, 1937, Bergman married dentist Petter Aron Lindström. The couple had one child, a daughter, Friedel Pia Lindström. They would divorce in 1950, while Bergman was embroiled in one of the major Hollywood scandals of the 20th century.
The vitriol directed towards Bergman and Rossellini caused problems for both, although during this period they made 'Europa '51' together, hailed as a celebrated example of Italian neorealist cinema. Eventually the couple divorced, parting company in 1957. Bergman is pictured with Renato, Isotta, and Isabella. Her split with Rossellini prompted an overdue reunion with Pia, her daughter with Lindström.
Theirs would be a long and for the most part happy marriage, although work commitments often tested the strength of the union. Bergman and Schmidt, seen here with Pia Lindström, eventually parted company in 1975.
In June 1974, Ingrid Bergman was diagnosed with cancer. She refused to allow the disease to interfere with her work, and while receiving treatment continued to appear on the big screen, the small screen, and on stage.
