Once the sole preserve of amusement parks and zoos, the monorail has evolved to become the answer to some of the most overcrowded cities in the world. Defined by a railway in which the track consists of a single rail or a beam, the term "monorail" is often used to describe any form of elevated rail or people mover. China and Japan have some of the longest and busiest monorails, and the United States can also boast several famous tracks. But there are many more examples in other countries that are worth taking a ride on.
