Many of these iconic landmarks are listed on the US National Register of Historic Places
LIFESTYLE History
Travel across almost any region of the United States and you're very likely to pass a one-room schoolhouse. These iconic landmarks were once widespread in America, especially in rural areas of the country. Many appeared in the wake of the Land Ordinance of 1785, which began the land surveys that laid out townships and sections across the growing nation. Widespread throughout the 1800s and early 1900s, the one-room schoolhouse was considered largely redundant by the mid-20th century. Many were abandoned, but most have survived, preserved as iconic landmarks and listed on the US National Register of Historic Places. They stand today as symbols of frontier values and of local and national development.
