In Rome on the same day, October 31, 1993, the great Italian film director and screenwriter Federico Fellini, known for such cinema classics as '8½' (1963), died after a heart attack.
River Phoenix's life was cut short on October 31, 1993 after the actor died from combined drug intoxication, having overdosed on cocaine and heroin (a mixture commonly known as a speedball).

Soviet political leader and one of the most feared dictators of the 20th century, Josef Stalin died on March 5, 1953.
