CELEBRITY Retrospective
Dorothy Dandridge was one of the few Black starlets to shine during the supposed 'Golden Age of Hollywood.' She battled segregation laws, racism, and misogyny within the film industry, and still successfully landed many impressive leading roles in the 1950s. Dandridge refused to take on slave roles and fought to be the leading lady we remember her as today.
Exceptional beauty and talent weren't enough to make it in those days. It was her tenacity and her unshakeable sense of self-worth that got her farther than any woman of color prior. The New York Times reported that she once said, "If I were Betty Grable, I could capture the world." One of her co-stars commented that she "was the right person in the right place at the wrong time."
As with many women who started working in Hollywood at a young age, Dandridge suffered many difficulties in her personal life. Her life ended abruptly at a tragically young age, but her legacy as a trailblazer, artist, and political activist lives on.
