Also known as the "Sailor King," William IV served as a Rear-Admiral of the Royal Navy. He was active between 1780 and 1789, and served in the American War of Independence.
Having served in both the First and Second World Wars, the late member of the royal family was promoted to Admiral of the Fleet of the Royal Navy in 1956.

The late Duke of Edinburgh served as a Commander in the Royal Navy and served in the Second World War aboard several battleships.
