Hanging art above your bed can really give your bedroom a nice decorative touch. But beware of the distance between the bed and the picture(s). And, of course, the overall surrounding space.
Instead, hang a mirror on a side wall or have one by your bed, in harmony with the rest of the decor.
Hang your art too high on the wall and it will look misplaced. It's better to keep it closer to your bed, as illustrated in this picture.
While experimenting with bold color schemes can be great in other rooms of the house, sometimes this is not the case with bedrooms. In which case, neutral hues are a safer bet.
Having a mirror reflecting on you while you sleep is bad Feng Shui. But even if you're not into this Chinese geomancy, aesthetically it doesn't look great either.
When decorating your bedroom, pay special attention to scale. A piece of furniture or object that's too big or too small for the room will stand out and look weird.
While you might adopt a more minimalist style, the risk of having too little stuff is that it can make your bedroom look cold and sterile.
Too much furniture, too much clutter: a busy bedroom is not a peaceful bedroom. This defeats the whole purpose of this room.
How many decorative pillows are too many? Well, a good rule of thumb is that if they cover half or more of your bed, then it's probably too much.
A ceiling fan with a light is acceptable if you're at a hostel in a tropical destination without AC. Not at home!
Up to three layers is acceptable. More than that and you'll have a bed that's a pain to make every morning.
Nothing beats new, clean, and fresh bedding. It will make you feel better, and will have your bedroom looking nicer too!
Old, worn bed sheets make a bedroom look and feel a bit lifeless.
Don't make this mistake. Always check the size of your bed frame. If you really, really want that huge mattress, look into changing your bed too.
We often see spotlights marketed as "reading lights." Not only are they quite harsh on the eyes, but generally they don't look great either.
Instead, look for a nice bedside table lamp, placed at a comfortable reading height, and with a design that actually makes sense in your bedroom.
You love a nice, large mattress–we get it. Who doesn't, right? But beware of how it fits your bed. Sometimes people buy mattresses that are too big for their bed frames.
Pay attention to the size, shape, and temperature (color) of light bulbs. Make sure if fits perfectly and gives you the type of lighting you're looking for.
Visible light bulbs, like those we sometimes see poking out of bedside table lamps, are a huge no-no.
A headboard can really change the look and feel of a bedroom. Don't be afraid to experiment and give large headboards a chance.
If your headboard disappears when you place pillows on your bed, then it's probably too small.
Bedroom sets are a thing of the past. Sure, you'll want your bedroom furniture to work well together, but having the exact same color and line in every piece is a bit old-fashioned.
Instead, place unique pieces that work well together. You will still have to work with a color palette and materials that go well together, but it will look less rigid than a matching bedroom set.
You can't go wrong with two large pillows, even if you end up just sleeping with one. Having an extra pillow will work great aesthetically and keep you comfy in a seated position in bed.
Small pillows are okay, if it's a child's bedroom! Otherwise, place bigger ones on your bed.
A larger rug that covers the bottom and part of the sides will look much more harmonious with the bed.

People usually make this mistake when shopping for rugs to place at the bottom of the bed. A rug that's too small will just look awkward.
