The use of botox injections for cosmetic purposes is one of the more controversial beauty topics of the 21st century. Some feel that people should be free to undergo treatment if they feel it will give them more confidence, while others feel that cosmetic procedures emanate a toxic beauty culture that is based on pretense.
Celebrities in the spotlight are often judged harshly if they choose to have botox injections, and yet they are also judged harshly for looking older. The discourse has prompted many stars to speak publicly on the topic.
The latest and perhaps most unexpected of which is Joe Jonas. “We’re all getting older and part of that is being comfortable [in our skin],” the 33-year-old musician told People along with the announcement that he is the new celebrity brand partner for Xeomin, an anti-wrinkle injectable similar to Botox which temporarily reduces the appearance of frown lines and wrinkles.
“We can be open and honest about it and be confident and not really shy away from speaking our truth," the middle Jonas Brother said, explaining that he used the injectables for his frown lines and to smooth out a scar between his eyebrows. He added that by speaking about his cosmetic treatments he hopes other men will feel comfortable to do the same. “There were all these talks at one point, like, ‘Oh, men can’t do this or it’s weird for guys to do that,’ and I think there’s a stigma that’s fading, and I like that,” he said. “Guys are more openly wearing makeup, and it’s great to see. It’s like, do whatever you want, you know? It’s a beautiful generation that we’re living in.”
