Boseman's wife, Taylor Simone Ledward, accepted the award on his behalf. "He would thank God. He would thank his parents. He would thank his ancestors for their guidance and their sacrifices," she said in an emotional speech.

The film, and its source play, tell the story of Ma Rainey, an influential blues singer, and one turbulent recording session in 1920s Chicago. Boseman filmed between surgeries and chemotherapy, and the movie was released after he passed.
