▲Steelers fans are partially to blame for this team hatred. Through traditions like the “Terrible Towel,” they have been known to be particularly boastful.

▲Dirty plays have also contributed to the cause. For example, former player James Harrison racked up $125,000 in fines in the 2010 season alone, according to ESPN.

▲The first, but certainly not the last, Boston team on the list, the Red Sox are not very well-liked by the general fan base. They are only second in their payroll totals to New York, according to The Sportster.

▲The Bay Area team seems to only sport local fans, some of which are incredibly scary. In 2013, a 49ers fan stabbed a Falcons fan in the neck over a loss.

▲Their slogan comes off as incredibly arrogant to many fans as well. “Who’s got it better than us?” “Nobody!”

▲The biggest cause of hatred for this team is their name. As Huffington Post stated, many find it disparaging to Native Americans. Their owner however, Daniel Snyder (pictured), says that it is a way of honoring them, according to ESPN.

▲Alienating their own fan base, the Redskins also experienced problems after moving their main stadium outside the downtown area. It made the commute much more difficult for the die-hard locals.

▲At 16 championships, just one behind the Boston Celtics, this franchise is one that everybody loves to hate.

▲Celebrities are supposed to be role models, athletes being no exception. However, the Lakers aren’t fitting the bill. Late player Kobe Bryant was charged with sexual assault in 2003, and there have been other arrests involving DUIs and even threatening a police officer, according to Yahoo.

▲It was a huge controversy back in 2007, when coach Nick Saban moved from LSU to Alabama. This would have been difficult under normal circumstances, but it made it even worse that the colleges are huge rivals.

▲Ultimately however, people just hate them because despite their flawed system, it works. They won the 2018 National Championship against Georgia in overtime.

▲Not a surprise on this list, the New York Yankees are arguably the most hated team in baseball. Since there is no salary cap in baseball, the Yankees are known for paying exorbitant sums for their players.

▲The steroid controversy hit the Yankees hard, with former player Alex Rodriguez finally caving and admitting that he used steroids.

▲No one hates the Trojans as much as UCLA, but they aren’t very popular in other areas either. Fansided calls them “the most hated team in California.”

▲They have had two different players that were required to forfeit their trophy, including O.J. Simpson and Reggie Bush (pictured).

▲Business Insider calls them “the most polarizing team in the league.”

▲Why? Maybe people are remembering Dwayne Wade and LeBron James’ flops. Or maybe it's because the people affiliated with the team frequently put their foot in their mouths, like owner Micky Arison (pictured) screaming “stay white!” in his speech after they won the NBA Finals in 2006.

▲The first hockey team on the list, the Red Wings have a lot of enemies in the hockey realm. Their tradition of throwing dead octopuses onto the ice upset many rival fans and animal lovers.

▲Many were also upset that Detroit trademarked the phrase “Hockeytown,” as they felt that the city didn’t deserve the title, according to The Sportster.

▲The team is known for making some pretty arrogant comments. Joe Lacob (owner, pictured) in a 2016 interview with the New York Times, called the team “light-years ahead of probably every other team.” That may have been a bit much.

▲All NBA players complain when they feel a call doesn’t go their way. However, the Golden State Warriors often take it to the next level. Steph Curry was seen throwing his mouthguard (and hitting a fan with it) when he fouled out in 2017.

▲Many feel the Jets are not a cohesive unit. According to ESPN, stories came to light about teammates bashing each other, like former players Sheldon Richardson and Brandon Marshall in the locker room.

▲They seem incredibly disorganized, which alienates their own fan base as well. For instance, former coach Todd Bowles forgot to tell their starting quarterback, Ryan Fitzpatrick, that he was benched in 2016. Bowles told the media first.

▲The Celtics have won more championships than any other team in the NBA (17). It’s not shocking that people would despise them for it.

▲The “Big 4” was a huge contributor to this hatred, as it’s easy to despise such a skillful combination as Paul Pierce, Kevin Garnett, Rajon Rondo, and Ray Allen.

▲Many remember Notre Dame's offensive foray into merchandising, where they placed “Catholics vs Convicts” on their shirts for the Miami game.

▲Secondly, there is their involvement with the BCS national championship. They are still one of the main teams that influence the championship, even though their record hasn’t been very positive during its existence. Forbes points out that “no one likes unearned privileges except those who receive them.”

▲Unfortunately a lot of the flak that the Eagles receive comes from their fan base, and not from the team itself. Sports Illustrated named them the Most Hated Fanbase in 2015.

▲Many people cite a throwback to 1968, when Santa entered the stadium to a chorus of boos and was pelted with snowballs, ESPN reports.

▲Players like Brad Marchand give the Bruins a bad rep. He’s well-known for diving, and has been suspended twice for dirty plays.

▲We also can’t forget former Boston Bruins player Milan Lucic. Bleacher Report placed him in the top 20 of the Most Hated NHL Players for many years.

▲Their move to Las Vegas in 2020 has caused quite a stir in the NFL community, and not necessarily for the better.

▲Oakland tried to make a bid to keep them, according to Huffpost, but the offer just wasn’t as good. Looks like the Raiders will be leaving home — much to the chagrin of their fans in the Oakland area.

▲Duke, in addition to their general arrogance, is known for some pretty dirty play. Dahntay Jones broke a jaw in 2003 while setting a screen during a game, while in 2007, Gerald Henderson broke the nose of a rival UNC player.

▲The fact that there is a documentary called ‘I Hate Christian Laettner,’ about a former Duke player, solidifies their place on this list.

▲The Seahawks have had several issues that would cause hatred in the NFL sphere. Head Coach Pete Carroll reportedly broke the disclosure rule in early 2017, which almost cost his team a draft pick.

▲Not only do they have team members who allegedly committed sexual assault, those same players injure their teammates with a “flying punch” according to Deadspin.

▲The public generally doesn’t like cheaters, so the numerous suspensions that the Broncos have had regarding performance-enhancing drugs, according to the NFL, is likely not endearing them to the public.

▲They also hired a new head coach in 2017, Vance Joseph, who was accused of sexual assault at the University of Colorado Boulder.

▲The Cavs have one of the best rosters, with five of what Sports Illustrated considers the best players in the NBA. This is considered by many to be unfair, as they will try to recruit players at whatever the cost.

▲Former Cleveland Cavaliers star player LeBron James’ attitude also didn’t help. Many local fans still haven’t recovered from when he left the Cavs for the Miami Heat in 2010.

▲It has been suggested the Colts threw one of their seasons in order to get a top quarterback draft pick in 2012.

▲They reportedly don’t take care of their players either, according to Deadspin. Andrew Luck, their quarterback, injured his shoulder in 2015 and was only able to get surgery during the off-season after 2016.

▲The Cowboys were cited as the most valuable sports team in 2017 by Forbes. This means that scrutiny is high on everything they do.

▲You don’t have to look far to find some controversial points. The Cowboys have recruited some questionable players in their time, including Adam “Pacman” Jones who was arrested six times before joining the team, according to the NFL.

▲In 2004, the Chicago Blackhawks were named the Worst Sports Franchise by ESPN. This means that it was not just in the NHL, but for every team out there.

▲Their fans are also a drag on their popularity. After Chicago won the Stanley Cup in 2013, ABC News reported that there were 23 arrests made during the celebration.

▲The Patriots are arguably the most hated NFL team in America. Tom Brady, their former quarterback, was labeled as the most hated player in the NFL in 2017 by Sporting News. Their reputation was not improved after their later Super Bowl win against the Falcons in 2017, and their win against the Rams in 2019.

Patriots players have also had numerous run-ins with the law. Late player Aaron Hernandez was one of the worst of these, as he was found guilty of first-degree murder in 2015.

They are also known for having quite a few bandwagon fans, something that die-hard fans just can’t abide.

It's hard to quantify what makes someone hate a sports team. Is it the way they play? Their actions off the field? Maybe it's just how their fans act.
