It may not be a shock that Cher’s real name isn’t actually just Cher—but it came as a real shock to the star herself when she discovered at 33 that she had a completely different legal name to the one she had always believed.
Revealing the story in her new autobiography, 'Cher: The Memoir, Part One,' the singer and actress explains that she always believed her name was Cherilyn. Her mom had told her that she chose it as a combination of the names Cheryl, after Lana Turner's daughter, and Lynda, after her own mom.
Unfortunately, the nurse at the time only heard the first part of the story and after having just given birth, her 19-year-old mom, Georgia Holt, was too exhausted to notice. So, in 1979, when Cher decided to change her legal name to match her stage name, she was shocked to find out that her name had actually been Cheryl all along! She also decided to remove the four surnames she had accumulated: Sarkisian from her father, LaPiere from her stepfather, and Bono and Allman from her two ex-husbands.
So now she really is just Cher. But there are some other celebs who have been hiding behind stage names for years. Did you know that Brad Pitt’s real name is William? Or that Jennifer Anniston is actually Joanna Aniston? Read on for some more shocking celeb revelations.
