Leonardo DiCaprio is visiting Brazil’s Pantanal, the world’s largest tropical wetland, to learn about conservation projects protecting local wildlife. At Fazenda Caiman in Miranda, he’s exploring initiatives focused on jaguars, hyacinth macaws, parrots, anteaters, armadillos, and sloths.
The 131,000-acre property, equivalent to around 53,000 hectares, dedicates more than 37,100 acres (15,000 hectares) to conservation, combining scientific research, ecotourism, and wildlife protection efforts.
His visit comes at a critical time for the Pantanal, which is facing growing environmental threats. Over the last few months, vast swathes of this beautiful but fragile ecosystem have been destroyed by devastating wildfires, many of which are caused by human activities.
The Pantanal boasts an extraordinary concentration and diversity of flora and fauna, and much of the region is recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This rare and delicate environment is home to some of the world’s most threatened wildlife, making the protection of its habitats more important than ever.
