Halsey and other celebs raising awareness about mental health
The singer opens up about living with bipolar disorder
CELEBRITY Mental health
In a time where mental illness is more prevalent than ever, breaking the stigma around issues like depression, anxiety, and various disorders can be a matter of life and death.
Our society worships celebrities, especially those with die-hard fandoms, and it puts stars in a position where they can make a real difference. Many of those celebrities themselves have been struggling in silence for some time, but many have also decided to open up to the public—which is not an easy thing to do—and help raise awareness about these incredibly important issues.
Halsey is the latest star to speak up about her own experiences with mental illness, particularly about living with bipolar disorder.
She told Rolling Stone that even while she’s been “Halsey” (her real name is Ashley Nicolette Frangipane), she has been committed twice. "It's been my choice,” she explained, “I've said to [my manager], 'Hey, I'm not going to do anything bad right now, but I'm getting to the point where I'm scared that I might, so I need to go figure this out.' It's still happening in my body. I just know when to get in front of it."
She spoke at length about how her varying states affect her career, and how her third album will showcase the first music she’s ever written while manic. The most admirable thing about her process is that she accepts and acknowledges her bipolar condition, and she takes care of herself by staying clean and channeling that energy in a productive way.
Halsey follows the footsteps of many other courageous stars in her candidness. Take a look through the gallery and find out which celebrities are combating the stigma of mental illness, and learn more about the signs and symptoms so you can help raise awareness too.
