Stars who suffer from rare diseases
Daisy Ridley reveals diagnoses with Graves' disease
CELEBRITY Health
While celebrities may seem like they have it all together, sometimes that's only surface deep. Many of the stars you know and love are actually suffering from rare diseases, undergoing treatment, and finding ways to cope while juggling their already intense schedules.
'Star Wars' actress Daisy Ridley recently revealed that she has been diagnosed with a condition known as Graves' disease in a Women's Health cover story. The rare illness is an autoimmune disease that results in irregular thyroid function and can cause weight loss, fatigue, and tremors. Ridley started to experience these symptoms while working on her latest film, 'Magpie,' in which she plays a woman losing control as her marriage falls apart. “I thought, ‘Well, I’ve just played a really stressful role; presumably that’s why I feel poorly,'” she recalled.
However, her general practitioner encouraged her to see an endocrinologist to investigate further. The doctor told her that Graves' can make you feel “tired but wired,” and Ridley recognized that she was dealing with more than a stressful job. “It was funny, I was like, ‘Oh, I just thought I was annoyed at the world,’ but turns out everything is functioning so quickly, you can’t chill out.'” Graves' disease can cause a racing heart, shaky hands, sweating, and irritability. It is most common in women and people over 30.
