Sometimes a film is remade so long after its original, or its original was never well known, that people aren't aware that the movie is a remake at all.

Other times, as is the case of 'The Island,' the makers don't want the public to know that the movie is a remake.

There are also numerous remakes that became Hollywood blockbusters, but were actually re-imagined French, Spanish, South Korean, and Hong Kong originals.

Here are 30 movies you didn't know were remakes.

▲Al Pacino's seminal performance in 'Scarface' (1981) has made the film an all-time classic, but it's actually a remake of a movie with the same name from 1932. The original is considered a brutal masterpiece in its own right.

▲'Dinner for Schmucks' (2010) is an American remake of the French film 'Le Dîner de Cons' (1998). Both films were major blockbusters in their respective countries.

▲Originally a book from 1980, it became a TV movie in 1988, and later went to the big screen in 2002. It was followed by three sequels, all major Hollywood successes.

▲One of Bruce Willis' most famous sci-fi roles, '12 Monkeys' (1995) is based on the French short film 'La Jetée' (1962). Universal Studios acquired the rights to the French production before turning it into a full-length feature film.

▲One of Tom Cruise's most memorable performances, 'Vanilla Sky' (2001) was a remake of the Spanish movie 'Abre los ojos' (1997). Penélope Cruz played the same role in both movies.

▲This star-studded mafia movie is a remake of the Hong Kong film 'Infernal Affairs,' though Jack Nicholson's portrayal of his character was drawn from the real-life crime boss Whitey Bulger.

▲'The Tourist' (2010) starring Johnny Depp and Angelina Jolie is a remake of the French movie 'Anthony Zimmer' (2005), starring Sophie Marceau and Yvan Attal. Though 'The Tourist' earned far more than 'Anthony Zimmer,' the French movie is widely considered the better film.

▲'The Wizard of Oz' (1939) is considered to most watched movie of all time, but it was preceded by a 1925 silent, black and white film. Both were based on the 1900 children's book 'The Wonderful Wizard of Oz.'

▲While most people know the 2012 production of 'Total Recall' is a remake of the 1990 version with Arnold Schwarzenegger, not everyone knows that the 1990 version is based on the Philip K. Dick short story, 'We Can Remember It for You Wholesale' from 1966.

▲Starring Keanu Reeves and Sandra Bullock, 'The Lake House' (2006) was a milestone in romantic film and a remake of the South Korean 'Il Mare' (2000).

▲'The Manchurian Candidate' (1962) was a classic political thriller starring Frank Sinatra set during the Korean War. The 2004 version starring Denzel Washington was set during the Persian Gulf War, but both were based on the 1959 book by the same name.
