▲Berry got in trouble with the law again in 1961, when he was arrested for illegally transporting a 14-year-old Apache girl over state lines for "immoral purposes." He said she was supposed to work at his club as a waitress. He got out in 1963 after serving 20 months.

▲That's because he spent his formative years in a segregated, middle class neighborhood in northern St. Louis (known as "The Ville").

▲He was employed as a beautician in St. Louis when Muddy Waters discovered him.

▲Following in the footsteps of his sister, he graduated with a degree in hairdressing and cosmetology from the Gibbs Beauty School.

▲After dropping out of high school at 17, Berry stopped in Kansas City with some friends on his way to California, where they went on a robbery spree. He served jail time from 1944 to 1947.

▲In 1990, several women filed suit against Berry on accusations he hid cameras in the women’s restroom of one of his restaurants. He contested that he installed the camera to catch an employee he suspected was stealing from the restaurant. The charges were dropped after he agreed to financially compensate the women.

▲In search of patronage, Berry started to add up-tempo country songs to Sir John Trio's repertoire. Local white people began to hear about a "black hillbilly" and started to come to the predominantly black club where the Trio played.

▲To support his family, Berry worked as a janitor at the Fisher Body auto assembly plant for some time between 1947 and 1955.

As one of the pioneers of rock and roll, Chuck Berry really was the embodiment of America. With songs like 'Maybellene' (1955), 'Roll Over Beethoven' (1956), 'Rock and Roll Music' (1957), and 'Johnny B. Goode' (1958), Berry refined R&B and gave us rock and roll. As John Lennon said, "If you tried to give rock and roll another name, you might call it Chuck Berry."
