▲There are two legends regarding this so-called 'Devil's Bridge.' The first, which applies to many other bridges in Europe, says that the Devil himself had it built.

▲The Devil was so angry at the residents that he stomped his feet really hard on the rocks near the bridge, forming the holes that we can see today.

▲The legend behind the Teufelsbrücke (German for 'Devi'ls Bridge'), in Switzerland, is pretty similar to the one behind the Ponte Del Diavolo in Italy. According to local rumors, a Swiss shepherd was struggling to build a bridge, so he made a wish to the Devil.

▲The Devil then showed up and had the bridge built, under one condition: that the soul of the first person to cross it would belong to him. The residents, however, decided that a goat should be the first to cross it.

▲The Devil got so mad he decided he'd smash the bridge with a huge rock, but on his way, he crossed paths with an old woman who was holding a crucifix and scared him away.

▲Myths aside, the bridge is located on the Schöllenen valley, which is an important access route to St. Gotthard Pass.

▲In France, the Devil's Bridge can be found in the region of Hérault, near Saint Guilhem-le-Désert.

▲Legend says the residents of Saint Guilhem used to leave isolated by the abyss, which made it impossible to cross the river there.

▲In order to get to the other side, locals had to walk a long and dangerous path through the mountains.

▲The Devil promised a resident he's build a bridge in exchange for his soul, but the man tried to trick him by having a cat cross the bridge instead.

▲The angry Devil jumped into a whirlpool, and a local priest threw holy water on the bridge to get rid of bad energies the Devil left behind.

▲Another Devil's Bridge in Italy is situated on the island of Torcello, near Venice. Unlike the other bridges, this one is actually quite easy to cross - but there's also a terrifying legend surrounding it.

▲According to the story, a young Italian woman fell in love with an Austrian soldier.

▲In order to put an end to the relationship, the young woman's family moved to Venice, where she later received the news of her lover's death.

▲She decided to go look for a witch and made a pact that the Devil would bring back her love. They would meet exactly where the bridge is built today.

▲According to the legend, the Devil brought the soldier back, but the witch vanished without fulfilling her side of the promise. Because of that, it is said that the Devil comes back to the bridge looking for the witch every December 24.

▲But all myths aside, Torcello's Ponte Del Diavolo is one of the few in Italy that still preserves its original structure.

▲The Rakotzbrücke, in Kromlau, is also known as the Devil's Bridge.

▲According to local legend, its shape and complexity could only mean that the Devil built it.

▲The ancient story explains exactly how the bridge was built. Legend says the bridge was built by the Devil after a priest requested it.
